2017 Explorer PIU
My 2017 Explorer PIU just started having a transmission problem. It has 63k on the odo. The transmission not going into gear?? It's intermittent. When I put it in reverse, I dont get the "R" indicator and the gear does not "grab" its as if it's in neutral. If I give it some gas sometimes it will slam into gear and the check engine light will go on along with a fuel economy pop-up warning, which does go away after next start. I have not tried pulling a code yet. I get similar actions when going into drive with the same behaviors.

I checked the fluid, looks ok but could probably use a change

Once it's in gear the car drives normally.

Has anyone experienced this?? If so how was it fixed?

sounds like slow to build line pressure, could be a leak. on a 5r55e id look for the separator pin alignment, but not sure on these newer ZF (?) transmissions

Do the other gears work as they should?

If you have trouble, the solenoid pack may be the problem, specifically Solenoid B sticking. Try new fluid, and when you drain it, check for debris (and try a magnet to see if you get steel bits).
