Year, Model & Trim Level
2021 ford explorer xlt
I have a 21 explorer, recently had some road debris come up and blow a hole in my drivers side headlight lens. These headlight assembly are crazy expensive. I noticed on Amazon you can buy just the lens. Has anyone attempted to change just the lens?

I wonder if any junkyards have the whole assembly, cheaper... since what i found on Amazon was still $226 (minus 15% promo code for the one I saw):

I don't recall reading of anyone doing the lens swap... but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. A forum search for "lens swap" gave no search hits.

Does anyone know the differences between different model years, trim levels, and illumination type, or are they all LED and only trim level and model year applies?

I've called around to a few junk yards around here and they all want north of $900, I've found a few on ebay for around $300 but they all have broken tabs for the mounting bolts

Wow, I'm surprised that they are going for that much from junkyards, but I checked on car-part.com and also see several entries around a $950 price point, but some are lower, you might call a few and see if they are fully intact if not noted well on the listing:

Heh, the forum code does not like that link, maybe this shortened link will work:

If you don't hear from anyone on this forum, you might try contacting one of the sellers of the lens or lens/housing assembly (coming without the LED module, I assume) to find out if they know what it entails to make the part work, for example does the old one need baked in an oven to soften up adhesive to crack it open, as many autmotive headlight assemblies do, and then what adhesive is needed to seal it back (or what would work best) if not included with the product.

Normally the front lens is polycarbonate, and a methylene chloride based cement is commonly used for polycarbonate, and seems compatible with (what might be...) an ABS housing, but that seems rather permanent, like it might never come apart again for better or worse. Similarly, epoxy might work, particularly if the mating surfaces are roughed up a little, but also might be challenging to get apart later. I wonder about urethane adhesives like those often used to attach windshields.
