I am having trouble deciding on getting a set of 20s or 22s for my 97 Explorer XLT.....Im leaning towards the 22s but to be honest I don't know why. Maybe its the whole bigger is better thing stuck in my head, but I don't want that biting me in the ass. I have no plans on lifting or lowering my Explorer. I don't take it off road even though it is 4x4. Mud has cost me lots of money in past rides. I am preparing to sink about 1500 in this ride. Since I dont want the note that comes with a nice ride, I figured Id make my ride a Nice Ride. These are my plans just in case it helps with the picture since I currently dont have any pix. I ordered billet grilles for top, and bumper. Will be here monday. I am ordering a 2.5 inch cowl induction scoop for the hood along with some euro tail lights.(projection headlights will be one of the last things, as I can do alot more with 300.00 right now) I have a little bit of body work to do on my back fender and bumper. after the body work is complete. Me and a buddy will be painting the whole truck Viper Blue Pearl with Metalic. and unless I am told by a high number of people that 20s would be better, then I will be putting 22s on it. Also If you can help I have one more question. I have grown up a firm believer that V6's arent made for exhaust systems....but the hell with that, I dont wanna be the loudest and baddest truck on the street, I just want something with a good mellow tone, not something that is gonna sound annoying, but something that is going to sound nice and smoothe, maybe even grab your attention a little bit....and let ppl know when you got down on it, but without busting their eardrums...if that makes any since....lol...I guess what im saying is I dont want the redneck sound of straight pipes, glass packs, and cherry bombs. though I have nothing against them. With that said, I have 97 Explorer XLT 4x4 V6 SOHC. Any help, advice or anything would be greatly appreciated!

I guess the only thing I would tell ya is that 20's would ride a little better than the 22's due to the tire size you're gonna need. If you don't mind the ride then go balls out and get the 22's. I like my MAC cat back exhaust, (I have the 5.0) I'm pretty sure they make a kit for your 6.

Thanks, I appreciate it.....So far all ive really been able to do is pull up some you tube videos and try to listen to them, but so far it hasnt been really helpful....Ive only come across one that I felt sounded ok, it was the dynomax turbo....any thoughts on it.?

Or you could go even bigger with the rims, and buy some 24"S. I have a 97 xlt also... Let me know.

22's are okay if you just gotta have big rims and super low profile tires for some reason.

I'd suggest sticking with whatever wheel size lets you run 50 or 45 series sidewalls and keep the stock tire diameter. Anything lower than 45-50 series rides like a dump truck and costs $$$ to replace a wheel when you hit a big pothole or something.

I think performance (i.e. light) 18"-20" wheels with performance rubber would look and work better than heavy chrome bling wheels that are just for show - and actually make your ride slower (due to the insane amount of rotating weight) and burn more gas.

If you want an exhaust, they make a bolt-on Dynomax Super Turbo kit (and Dynomax is currently offering a $75 rebate on their cat-back kits, too), or if you want it a little louder, you can go with a Dynomax Ultra Flow, Magnaflow, or Borla muffler.

Hey man, I ended up going with some 20 inch boss motorsport rims. Im really glad I did!

As I have said before, if you like it, who cares. Congrats on the rims man, I started with 20's also.
