Well the 'ol beast just turned 220,000 miles and its's still going strong. Here is a list of what I've done to it.
-Oil and filter change at 5,000 mile intervals (DuraBlend oil and Motorcraft filter).
-K&N air filter with holes drilled in the air box (dumb idea).
-Third set of plugs (Bosch Platinum).
-Original plug wires.
-Transmission fluid and filter changed at 100,000 mile intervals.
-Fuel filter changed at 100,000 mile intervals.
-Original battery.
-Original 02 sensors (yea, the check engine light is on).
-Lower ball joints replaced.
-Original exhaust.
-Brake pads replaced when necessary.
-Original rotors (Never been turned).
-Third set of tires.
Sure it's starting to show it's miles, it creaks and groans, gets decent gas milage (16-18), it idles a little rough and it has a few dings and scratches, but it starts every time and gets me where I want to go.

That's pretty damn impressive. The thing I can't belive is the origional battery is still holding in, especially considering the winters you get there in Ohio.

Holy crap how have you managed to get 220k on a 96?

I can vouch for the original battery thing. I just replaced mine a month ago and the production date for my truck is mid '94.

Congrats man! I have 210,000 on my Toyoya, 115,000 on my S10, and 120,000 on my Mustang. I hope they last as long as your Explorer has.

I thought my 175,000 was pretty good. Hows the trans on that thing cause i would love it if I got 220k out of my trans.

Dang, my 96 only has 80k. you about triple my mileage. good luck and hopefully she'll run for another coupla hundred thousand.

Where have you been driving to put that many miles on a '96?? My '91 has just 90K, which is a whole lot less that you have on a vehicle 5 years newer. I'm glad to hear that it has held up that well for you for so many miles. :) Hopefully you'll get many more out of it.

Some guys have all the luck!!

:D
Great to hear about your lack of need for the board!!
Did you buy it new? You hit the assembly line lottery of no major issues!! Well on the bright side---I guess the more I spend...the more I'll appreciate my money pit.

Good For You Bro---Here's to Ya :chug:

"dumb idea"
Why was the K&N with the drilled air box a dumb idea? Was is the K&N or the drilled air box? I was thinking of doing this or going with the KKM cone change out, but don't know wick is better overall. Let me know why it is a dumb idea so I can learn from ya!:D

I'm not sure why it didnt work out for him, but everybody else I have heard from loves theirs. I noticed more power with mine than with my FIPK. More power and it was free (minus the cost of the K&N drop in filter). What could be better than that? Cut it, you'll love it.

My '92 has 276,000 and although it's been retired due to the transmission going out, the engine is still running strong.

oh, btw, '92 4wd for sale. Problems: Transmission is toast. 4wd doesn't engage (I've never taken the time to cure this problem, as I haven't needed it the past few months)

Everything else is in really good shape. All leather, all power, sunroof, k&n filter, modified airbox.

Randy

......Make me an offer. It's in Louisville, KY.

'93 with 120k and going strong. I drive this thing more than my car w/ 50k. Love my X!!!

Dumb Idea

Blake,
After I cut the holes in the air box I didn't notice any improvement in power or gas mileage. The only difference was a "howling" sound when I got on the gas hard. This is similar to turning over the air cleaner cover on mom & dads station wagon when I was 16. If you think about it when you cut the holes in the air box the engine will start pulling more hot air from inside the engine compartment rather than the cooler denser air from outside.
Just my 2 cents.

Im not sure where you cut yours, but on mine, I cut a big square out of the front of the air box only, because thats where the stock inlet hole was. The stock hole was designed to only pull the cooler air from behind the headlight, so thats why I only cut the front. Yours may have a different setup, but if you only cut where the stock hole was, it should improve performance.

My 91 is only a few thousand from 200,00. It still has the original motor and tranny (never been worked on) A few other things have been replaced(battery, alt, radiator, H2O pump), but nothing really major. I even have the original rotors, though they are in need of being replaced.
