2008 Explorer Limited
I have a 2008 Explorer limited with the optional 20 inch wheels. Tires on it now are just junk, Bridgestone Dueler Alenzos, won't balance or anything. Shop recommends new tires, so I'm pulling the trigger. I want the Nitto NT 420s all seasons. Current tires are 255/50r20, I can get the Nitto's $40 cheaper per tire for a 45 sidewall instead of the 50. I'm on a major budget and aim to get the 45's. Would the 45 sidewall be and look ok for my Explorer? I understand ride quality will change but I just don't want my SUV looking goofy. Anyhow any info is greatly appreciated before I bite the bullet and order these tires. Thanks!

45's eh, hmmm, don't you have pot holes, bad road poor uneven drive entrances or hard hitting speed bumps. All of which can give the tire a good whack!! Even at 50 there isn't a whole lot of rubber between the rim and road.

If you go the other way a size or two like 55's the price will likely get cheaper as well. But I'll tell you, if you whack the tire hard in a pot hole you're going to "cry cry cry" (reminds me of a song) when you find out how much $$$ a new rim will be for just that one when it bends it. Replacing all four with any other and that guy you see in the mirror is going to look real sick.

Look at other tires if you're looking to save as there are a lot of value out there in good brands. Check review and performance in various weather conditions.

The Explorer is a heavy vehicle and one good wallop and its all over. You been warned.
