$2900? am i being screwed?

Thats probably the route I'm going to take.... was $2700 the entire cost or just for the tranny?

Eveything! Install and all. I was told a rebuild was only a few hunded bucks cheaper. I was also told a 4x2 was more

I just happen to have my bill, dated nov 2, 2001. Tranny still runs great and I beat the HELL out of it. It has more than a few miles done at 170 kmh on it, and more WOT pulls then you can imagine... I am 19, it not my fault :D Heres the breakdown in CDN dollars

Gaskets + Seals - 154.35
Clutches of + S - 158.00 (I can't really read the dudes writing too great so it may not say that)
Planetary assembly - 379.95
filter - 29.50
Band - 84.03
Drum - 134.80
fluid - 40.00

total of 980.63 for parts

Remove Tranny, repair and replace Tranny - 500.00

tax 103.64 + 118.45

GRAND TOTAL $1702.72 smackaroonies.

Guess cost doesn't have everything to do with it. I have no complaints with this rebuild, like I said, it has withstood things it shouldn't have.

If you are going to spend that much money take to the dealer. For that price you can get a new one.

I've said it elsewhere so I'll repeat it here. The trouble with comparing rebuild prices is it all depends on what all is replaced. A cheap rebuild may only replace clutches, steels, bands and gaskets.... a slightly better one might add servos and a new pump, an even beter one will replace the sprags (one ways) and maybe even the planetaries, esp the OD planetary. Finally you could go full out like I have in my Diary rebuild. Each has costs associated. And there is an element of trust in the shop involved too. People do not understand trannies so shops could, if they wanted, lie to you and you'd have no idea.

If you do not have a shop you can trust, it is my opinion your best course of action is to get a reman'd tranny from Ford. They are not cheap but they are more or less done right.... and have a good warranty. (Never thought I'd be shilling for FORD).

That said, there ARE some quality rebuilders out there, but far and away most do NOT do an A4LD rebuild like it NEEDS to be done - and which is WHY they have such a bad rep on rebuilds. Simply put, if there are NOT hard parts being replaced, it's likely not a quality rebuild. The A4LD needs more things replaced on a rebuild than the usual trannie. Simple as that. "Soft rebuilds" are another rebuild moved 10,000 to 20,000 miles down the road.

There. I said it, again. SO shoot me.

The guy is giving me a 3 year, 50,000 mile warranty on his work.

Swanny... I wasn't dumping on your guy. That's a strong endorsement of his work. Plus he is replacing hard parts....still wanna know what all he plans to replace....

I understand. I was just answering the post about what kind of warranty. He briefly went through parts. but not a complete list. he said it would be a complete rebuild. i guess it doesnt much matter now, hes doing the work. lol
i have felt from the beginning that it was too expensive, but this guy was recommended to me for being honest... i guess the extra money is paying for that warranty..

DONT REBUILD< REPLACE! A new tranny runs from 2200 to 3000, just shop around. Then shop around for a tech who will drop it in for you. Have the tranny shipped to them. Viola.

yeah that sounds way to high i am in california and a guy have a rebuilt trans, from ford dealer for i think $2200 thats what they would sell him another for!! i still need get my spare trans. also i got a 91xlt for like $200 that some guy just gave away to me so i got all parts plus extras :) :D
