Our 98 XLT Sohc 4dr with 67k miles has started making a groaning noise from the rear end, as if the differential was dry of fluid. A trusted mechanic reported that the axle bearings were shot. It was full of fluid and the fluid. Has anyone else experienced this type of failure, at this few miles? We do occassionally tow a 2500lb boat about 20 miles to the lake. I checked NHTSA.org and could not find a TSB so it seems out of the ordinary.

thanks,
DG

been in alot of water with the rear end? Bearings don't like water... the water wears away the grease alot quicker

It's likely your rear diff got water in it when launching or retrieving the boat. You should get the entire axle inspected and re-sealed, then extend the rear diff breather line to the engine bay, along with the breathers from your other drivetrain components.

ON the Explorer or BII you can also take the rear breather to the fuel filler door, or even up to the top of the hatch fairly easy if you dont want to run a line all the way up.

Without proper maintenence a wheel bearing can go out QUICKLY as soon as the pre load or lube are wrong.
