Anyone done it or seen it done on a 3rd gen?

I noticed the other day that my 05 has the axle mounts with a tube connected that looks like its taking up the space that the front axle assembly should occupy.

Also the spindle/brake rotor area looks to have the splines that would accept a CV axle.

So unless I am missing something are all trucks built as they would be 4x4?

Parts list seems to be:

Front axle assembly
Transmission with transfer case (or just transfer case)
Wiring harness (if not already tucked up under the dash somewhere)

I have already found a few junkyards online that have some 4x4 3rd gens, just need to haggle a price.

Thoughts?

It would be much more easier for you to go AWD from a mounty... no electronics involved, totally mechanical.

I do remember a post here somewhere were a couple guys (one 2wd and one with 4wd) were going to switch front running gear with each other .. but never did see if they went though with it.

hmm. awd, that seems doable too, I am just looking to be able to get this thing on the beach if i can get stationed back on the east coast.
