Hey all,

So, since my Ranger seems to have defeated my efforts to ressurect it's reverse - I am considering option.
One I have come over is a new trans from an 05 3.0 (might be 2wd I am checking) that I can get for $600. This is a NEW really low miles trans. It was removed for a V8 conversion.

Obviously in a best case scenario, I could just bolt my bellhousing and transfer casse onto it and put it in, but I suspect it's a lot harder than that.

How compatible is this with a 4.0 5r55e from a 99 ?
Would I be at least able to pillage some of the parts that I will need to repair mine ? Would there be $600 worth of value in it should I decide to go that way or would I be better off just buying parts.

Glacier ? Aerostar ? Anyone ? Bueller ?

I thought the 5R55E had an integral bellhousing. If that's true then you can't just swap bellhousings.

The 5R55W has the unitary case without a dipstick. Your computer is calibrated to work with a 5R55E. If you want to swap it for a 5R55S, then there is a sticky thread on this. It requires a separate controller. The 3.0L torque converter, and rear output shaft are different on the 3.0L version as well as the check ball configuration, and extension housing from 2WD to 4WD.

So the 2005 Ranger doesn't use a 5r55e ?
It sounds like a lot of complication, but might be a good source of parts if nothing else.

I am going to try measuring and maybe using a longer reverse servo piston/rod assembly on Wednesday and see if that works.

I tried LOW 4x4 again and it made some nasty noises and only engaged once out of the two times I tried it. This could be my general lack of familiarizAtion with 4x4 trans cases though.

The reverse servo, what else does it control, and if it is this band not locking up what else should I NOT have ?

so 4x4 low shouldn't work as it sits now IF it was the band not fully engaging ?
It seemed to work, but then it also didn't seem to want to make up it's mind if it was in 4x4 high or low.
Because I've never been in another auto 4x4 ranger or expo, I have no idea how it's supposed to react.
I will measure the servo piston anyway, I really don't want to pull the trans for a full rebuild - I think I'd rather drive it without reverse and then do a stick conversion. Which would no doubt be a giant PITA.

Thanks Brooklyn

I'd wonder more about a VB issue or a broken band, than the reverse servo. Have you been into it at all, and are the bands adjusted? The reverse band doesn't affect the 4WD functioning, only reverse.

That later trans might be the descendant of the 5R55E, but it is so different that only the main internal parts would swap. The new unit in 2002 4dr.s is called a 5R55E(V6) in manuals, I still want to know if that was a misprint or not.

I'd like to know what is in the 2002-2004 Sport Tracs and Sports, a new 5R55E, or actually a 5R55W? When I get too many miles on my 99 SOHC, I'd like to swap for a later SOHC and the new 5R, plus a BW4410 AWD. That would require the PCM etc., too much to do for my current mileage. Regards,
