I am going to be switching to 4.56 gears soon. I have 3.73's limited slip in my explorer as of now. I have a parts explorer with 3.27 open gears in the front and rear. I already have the 8.8 and the Dana 35 out of that parts explorer. Since I have them out sitting in my garage I was just gonna get those geared up to 4.56 so I can essentially swap them in with very little downtime for my explorer.

My thoughts on this is it is an open differential so lockers are a little cheaper.
I am probably going to leave the front end open (maybe install a locker later on down the road)

For the rear I am thinking of doing it right, replacing the carrier with a Detroit locker and getting the gears set up on that.... Any thoughts, opinions, or advise? Am I on the right track?

I like your plan, I plan on swapping in a Detroit in my B2 sometime later and throwing the Aussie in my X. The Aussie is nice but strength of the stock carrier has me worried.

when you put the 4.56 gear in the rear you might have to grind down a tooth on the ring gear to get the carrier pin in. just thought i would add that in for ya

Yep that's what I did on mine, did the same on my 4.10 7.5.

Using the 3.27 gear axle is a good idea. That way you'll also end up with an extra 3.73 axle set, that someone else might want for their stock setup. Putting an Aussie in the front makes a huge difference, so don't hold off on it too long!

Thanks for all the positive input! Makes me feel better about buying all these parts!

Four0Sport a 3.73 would be a big improvement over my 3.27, hint hint haha
Yeah I have seen in some of your posts where you are trying to get different gears. It made me laugh! I am the kind of person that doesn't like to get rid of anything.... I always feel as if I may need it down the road. Plus it seems like a rule of thumb to say if you get the 3.73's you'll want at least 4.10's or 4.56's when you upgrade to 33's lol.

Thanks again for the help!

yeah i finally settled on looking for 4.10s when i get the extra money

Are you going to get your rear end re geared to 4.10's or are you gonna try and find a used disk brakes axle w/ 4.10's and swap it in?

I just ordered the 4.56 jegs brand ring & pinion for the rear. It was a little under $300 shipped. It came with the installation kit and the gear oil. Now I gotta get myself to fork it over for that Detroit!

my funds are.. well.. limited. so yeah, just looking for a 2nd gen rear disc 8.8 with 4.10s, the hard part is going to be finding a TTB D35 with 4.10s. not very common around here.

ive already talked to some friends at a local yard and priced a complete rear end with brake hardware and a front TTB pig for ~$300 so yeah im goin that route lol

I just found a set of 4.56 gears on CL for dana44/ford 8.8. 2 sets of 4.56 gears and master kits for $250. That is such a steal if I had my old truck, or if I had use for them right now :(

Wow that was a steal. I have yet to see any deals like that in my local classifieds.

I got my jegs 8.8 gears and install kit today. My detroit will be here on tuesday! I am like a kid on christmas day opening up presents when the fed ex and ups guys drop off packages LOL
