302 in a sport?

my original idea was to find a 5.0 from an explorer, and put it into a 01 or 02 sport... just wasnt sure if it was possible..

Yes it is possible. The engine compartments appear to be the same in the sports for 95-2002. Your best bet is to go with a 96+ Explorer V8 and and 4R70W tranny w/ the engine wiring harness. It will literally "hook up" to the wires under your dash in the big square connector. But you will need to go get all new exhaust though along with 2 or 3 02 sensors and a cat or two to remain emissions legal in most states. You will also need a bigger radiator than your current one.

I would do it in a heartbeat if I had the money.

You must have some serious cash to even consider buying an 01-02 Sport and then tearing into it!!
If you have that kind of money buy a 96+ and just pay somebody to do it.

I think the swap would be simple if you got a donor vehicle. After I pay mine off a bit I was thinking of doing it.

I had an 82 Ranger that I swapped a 302 into. I used some parts from a Maverick to fit it in. The computer was non-functional. (in fact, somebody stole the comp. while I had the truck torn apart!) I wired up what I needed and ran mechanical guages and stuff. This wouldn't be an emissions legal swap but at that time I didn't need emission testing. If it were an off road only vehicle it would be a lot easier to do the swap!

The engine going into the vehicle must be the same year or newer for emissions legality...so I'm told.
