96' Ford Explorer XLT
I'm currently working on a 302 5.0 HO swap in my 96' explorer. I will be pulling the old motor out in ~a week. I have quite a few questions though!

Fuel Pump: I have done some reading and decided that my stock fuel pump will be fine. Am I right?

Wiring Harness: I have both a 5.0 and a 4.0 harness. Does anyone know of a write-up about merging these two harnesses together? If not, Where can I find that info?

Computer: Anyone know if the 5.0 computer will fit into the firewall hole where my 4.0 computer is at?

Motor Mounts: Will the stock mounts from a mustang work? Or would it be best to buy some new ones that are made for explorers with 5.0's?

Radiator: A stock mustang Radiator will work just fine, i'm sure. Anyone know of any complications about installing it?

Now for the tranny, I'm going to be using a T-5 mustang tranny with an AA adaptor going toa Dana 300. (I know the D300 is a passenger drop, my next project is a solid axle with Passenger side Pumpkin :))

Anyone have a T-5 installed in a 95 newer explorer? If so, what did you do about the tranny crossmember. Did it have to be moved forwards/backwards? Or can it still work in the stock location.

Clutch: This is what I am confused about the most. Will it be easier to use a Slave Cylinder or a Throwout bearing? And, Can anyone explain to me the difference in the two?

I'm prob. getting in a little over my head with this motor swap. But, that is how I learn things. So, ANY tips, or help that people can give me will be MUCH appriciated.

Thanks,
Kendal

Wiring. You need the helms manuals for the year of your truck and the year of your engine harness/computer. There were slight changes every year, but nothing too in depth. When I did my 1999 Rnager with 1997 Explorer engine, I only had to change ~5 wires.

Motor mounts - use explorer 5.0L
Radiator - use explorer 5.0L
EECV - no issue with fit in dash (same case)

Other: use explorer 5.0L accessories, headers, cables, etc.. No reason to reinvent the wheel. Everything from explorer 5.0L fits and parts are cheap in salvage yards.

You will need custom chip burned to run 5-speed manual with explorer comp.

...

Hey,
Thanks for the quick reply. I will take a look at the helms manuals. It would be nice if someone had them scanned on their computer to send to me??? (:)).
I'll buy them both if noone has a copy of them. I'm trying to save as much as possible on this swap.

I figured that the 5.0 explorer motor mounts and radiator would be the easiest.
About the EECV, I will be using a mustang one. Since it is already for a 5 speed there should be no reasong to get a chip for it. (correct?)

The Mustang motor that I already have, comes with A/C,stock exhaust manifolds, P.S. pump, and everything else. I'm planning to use all of the stock mustang accesories. Over time I'll get some 5.0 headers and such for an' explorer.

Anyone know about the Fuel Pump, Clutch linkage, and the tranny crossmember?

THanks alot,
Kendal

What did you pull the motor out of (or will, rather). I'm guessing it's a Mustang from your questions.

When I do this, I'm going to use a matching 99 Explorer to get teh engine and harness complete. Then I should just be able to drop it in and just use the whole V8 harness.

Take lots of pics when you do the swap, as I'd really be interested in seeing them. Even if you don't post them, you could e-mail them to me or something.

Good luck! Can't wait to see it.

what about a x sport?

:exporange Are you swaping into a sport or a full size? I i wanted to swap to a sport, what would i have to do different?

You won't be able to get the mustang headers to work on the Explorer, unless you want to cut and modify them. I'd get in on the torque monsters headers if you can.

Nothing the front half of all Explorers is the same. Only issues may be the tranny length, as well as the driveshaft length. Probaly may need custom mounts and driveshaft.
