You will have do some heavy modifying to get that 4BT to fit.

I'm just about ready to do a 4bt swap in my 95, so I say 4bt.

I'll have the motor on Saturday.

i know rangers have done the 4bt swap with great success so i figure it would be no diffrent in the explorer.... ALSO i wanna run an eaton 9speed.... agian i can get one really cheap

Thats going to be a big trans, plan for a body lift. I've got a ZF-S542 that I hope to fit with just tunnel mods.

I just have to figure out what T-case to use and control with the factory TOD (4406?). Or swap in either the np205 or the bw13-56 I have collecting dust.

4bt, hands down.

4BT will def be more involved, a bit more costly, and require more fab work - but if you value reliability and gas mileage that's the motor to choose. If you're keeping you Ex for the long run, especially if it sees frequent use - go 4BT. What deters most people is its a bit of an investment to find a decent 4BT swap candidate.
