31x10.5's on a stock

Anyone have 31x10.5 BFG A/t's on their stock explorer (meaning with no lift kit)? will they fit? Any problems?

Well, tell us a little more about your Explorer. Year? 95+'s will definately fit a 31x10.5 I have a 96 and I'm running 32's stock right now. If it is a pre-95 Explorer, from my understanding, you can (and many have) run 31's stock. From what I have heard, it depends on your shocks. Try it out and see if it works.

Me being only 17 (this car was a present from my parents) has to check with them before I do something to the car, and they are pretty damn pissy about me doing anything. So how am I going to justify getting bigger tires? Anyone have some reasons to justify this. It's a 98 with 37k miles and the stock firestone tires.

Just for looks mostly. But I was hoping for some excuse about it making the car safer.

Isn't better looks justification enough? I put the 31's on my '99 a few months ago. No problems except for some minor rubbing on the bumper cover. A few minutes with a razor knife took care of that.

You could also add the fact that they are relatively the same size as a stock Eddie Bauer, Sport, and Limited (16 inch wheels) tire.

What size Rim do you have?
If you have the 15" rim, then getting new tires is VERY Important. If you remember all the Firestone problems with the 15" tires. But if you have the 16" Tires then your out of luck. Just tell them the truth. Oh yeah, I have a 97 Sport and I got the BFG's 265/75/R16, and I paid $699.99. New Larger tires will Cost you some money, so be prepared to pay lot for new tires.

tell your parents about the firestone recall and youre scared for your life. The stock tires are REALLY cruddy so its be justifiable enough just so you can stop quicker and handle the rig better..not to mention better traction in bad weather and of course off road.

Make sure you KEEP ALL of youre Firestones in case they get added to the recall and save your receipt for the new tires too...

Hey MHanrahan,
I'm in the same boat as you, i've got a 99 sport with 26K miles and i've got stock Wilderness AT tires, but they aren't under the recall. Anyway, when i replace my tires, i wanna get bigger ones for looks, but talkin my 'rents into it will be a little tougher. Also, does anyone use P265/70R15, apparently, they are 29.6 in diameter, and 10.4 in width? That would give me the width to fill the wheel well, and it would'nt risk rubbing. The only problem is they are hard to find. What brands make this size? And do they look good on a stock Xplorer?? Thanks.

If you look at the thread here and scroll down there is a picture of the area I had to trim when I put on the 31's. It is a minor alteration and you wouldn't even notice it if I didn't point it out. IMO, it wasn't the width that was lacking with the stock tires, but the diameter just looked too small.

Your sport is SWEET!!! I love the tires!! Do they ride much different from stock? better? worse? do u notice any more body roll?? And did it affect your speedometer? Thanks.

I really didn't notice much difference in the ride with the bigger tires. The speedometer is close enough to not worry about (actual 69 at an indicated 65 mph). Since I don't go offroad and live in a flat area the 3.27 gear does okay. It seems that the gas mileage went down slighty but I can live with it.
