Hey guys! I got a stock v6 4.0 sohc (205hp) and this is what i have ordered

33" tyres (15 inch mt classic alloy)
bodylift 883 3"
add-a-leaf
warrior shackles

and i will also do the TT.

Now the question I have is, do I really need anything else to save engine life? To keep the performance to a good level and make the engine life good, keep everything healthy.. Ive seen people talk about gears etc.. but I cant really find a good answer to why I should change that.. Do I really need more than what ive already ordered to go off road, and if I do, what? where do I get it?

people regear because you loose power from the larger tires and it puts more stress on your engine and transmission. your going to need recovery points like tow hooks up front and a hitch for the rear and of course a tow strap. you can pick up the hitch at a junkyard for cheap and the tow hooks, tow strap you can purchase at any auto parts store.

if i was using 35" or larger sure, but on 33"??

also the bodylift + tt/shackles gives me almost 5" lift, how is the driveshaft on the explorer? i was thinking about the angle, if the angle becomes to much and the shaft breaks? i had a wrangler TJ earlier and when i added 4" lift, i had to add a transfercase drop kit, just because of the angles..

Drive shaft is not an issue with the lift you are using as only 2" is suspension, and the other 3 is body and that does nothing to alter the drive angle. What is your stock gear ratio? There is a code on the door sticker

i'll check it out later today, but id like to swap to 4,56, no matter what I got, where can I buy 4,56 gears? can I swap the rear only? or do I need to change anything else... any good thread with a good tutorial for a change from stock to 4,56gears? thanks

If you have awd or 4x4 for must swap the front and rear gearing if you do a ratio swap.

Im no expert and new to 4x4 but I'm thinking you need to match the front and rear gears or they will be fighting each other ie: one will spin tires faster which I'm guessing would cause damage to the transfer case and tranny. But thats just a newbie guess.

Yes, the front and rear have to match.

From factory I believe the ratios are about .01 different front to rear which is part of the reason that a vehicle on dry pavement in 4x4 does not like tight turns and its speed is limited. Lack of traction allows this slight difference to not be a problem.

Setting up gears is a fairly technical task. I would recommend that you try to find a shop that can do it. Try ringpinion.com for good prices and be sure to review what you're looking at one here before you buy. They sell a lot of "value gear" brands that aren't good for daily driving (they are noisy/not built well).

You are looking at about $300/axle for new gears, plus labor to set them up (from looking on here anywhere from $200 - $500/axle).

Hope this helps.

not to high jack a thread but can you change the gearing on the front with IFS? or do I need to save and do a SAS?

There's still a ring and pinion inside the IFS front differential so yes, you can change the gears as it sits. The solid axle just affects the articulation.

couldnt find the numbers, found the vin number, will that help by any chance?

Yep, you have 3.73 limited slip. It's doable with 33" tires. Might want to split the difference to save some money and just get 32" if they make it in the tire you're looking for. It would just give you that little bit of extra advantage without the cost of regearing.

Here's a good chart that shows where you will be with different gear and tire combos:

Not to hijack thread but I have a 98 2WD Explorer w/ the 5.0 V8. I have the spindles and shackles, but waiting on tires. Will be going w/ 33x12.5 on 15" rim. My truck also has the 3.73's but the motor is stock.

I do plan on going with 4:10's down the road, but how important is it that I get them sooner than later?

I would like to do some engine mods first before gears: MAC CAI, Torquemonster headers, Motorcraft Wires, Plugs, and full exhaust. With those mods, would it make the need for 4:10's obsolete? Any help would be appreciated, thanks

i honestly wouldnt worry as much because you have the 5.0 v8^^

I would go with 4.10 as soon as you can. the engine isnt my concen nearly as much as the transmission. the 4r70w is beef but not indestructible. 4.10s will help alot.

how is the tranny on the 4.0 SOHC 1999? i will have the exact same setup, what's more close to stock, 4,10 och 4,53? I will do alot of offroad but i will also spend time on the road, more like 40/60 probably, the thing important to me is to preserve the life of the vital parts, such as engine and tranny..

4.56 would be my option. the trans behind the 4.0's arnt the beefiest so a lower axle ratio will help preserve it.
