33's on stock 16s or 20s?

I'm running around 2,300-2,400 RPMs at 70 on 35s with 4.10 gearing. I will probably regear in the future, but 4.10s are adequate IMO.

I have 32's with 4.10s and at about 70 mph I'm right around 2400-2500.

Hmm, don't know what to say. I ease up to it, set cruise control and RPMs sit around there. It doesn't take much of a hill to jump up to 3k, though. I try to keep RPMs below 2,500.

Just looked up the weight difference and I'm a good bit heavier, too. :dunno:

Do you mean the difference from a Sport to Sport Trac?

I did a 70mph run 2 hours ago and I was at 2200rpms as it sits now. So it should even itself out with the tires and gears. I keep my revs low too, below 3k all the time.

Could anyone tell me the difference between L/S and a lunchbox locker?

The locker always applies equal power to both wheels, no exceptions. The L/S is exactly that, limited slip. It applies power to both sides to a certain point until the clutches slip. That is why they don't hop or skip on turns. I've heard you can "trick" the L/S into applying more equal power when you get stuck by applying the brake while on the gas.

Basically both will be better off road, the locker being the best hands down offroad. The l/s was offered factory for some explorers. The l/s is better on the road. Personally, if you are doing it you may as well go with a real locker, as the l/s may not be all that much better.

Thanks for the info. Locker seems like the way to go. 33's on 20s, 4.10s and a locker is what i'll go with.

Thanks again guys!

4.56 would probably be better. I didn't mean to suggest that 4.10s are optimal. If you're switching gears, you'd probably be better off with 4.56.

It is my dd and I am on the highway alot in the summertime. So I do want to keep the RPM's fairly low for mpg. Why do you feel 4.56s would be better?

Somebody else would be better to answer that question. I'm crazy enough to like the way my 4.10s pull the 35s. I probably just don't know better. That, or everyone on this board over-hypes lower gears. The first scenario is probably more accurate.

1 more quick question. Is the stock front axle ratio the same as the rear stock? Would 4.10s in the rear and 4.11s in the front be compatible?

That's 2 questions but oh well :)
