Not sure how to add a link here but this site shows my progress so far with my swap.
Next step for me is to find another car to drive so I can start ripping into this thing.
I should be ankle deep into the project in April.
I'll update when more happens.

Hey Johnnyfiveoh. I love what you are doing. I hope you don't mind but i want to see this build up all the way. I am preparing to do a 5.0L swap on my 92 4x4.I want to do as much as possable so i can do the engine swap and then figure out the wiring.

If you don't mind....how is it all going to fit together?????What mods did you do to the engine?????Will the 5.8L swap headers work or will you have to use 5.0L Explorer headers????

Thanks
shane

Rock on with yo bad self. That will kick ass. What cam are you going to use? I hope you're going custom.

Thanks 86caprirs. I'm hoping the headers I have for it now will fit with little agravation. The engine I've built is an '85 block from a Crown Vic. It's got forged dished 9.0-1 ratio TRW pistons. The cam is spec'd out for high torque, mid level horsepower, I can't remember the #'s but are slightly bigger than my stock mustangs. The heads are from my '88 Mustang E7TE's. I've gone wild cam before with my fox body cars in the past and learned very quickly that bigger is NOT always better. The cam I finally went with on my '88 Mustang was an E303. That was perfect.
My truck will remain a daily driver and I tow alot so I remain happy with a practical setup.
I'd have to estimate HP will be around 270 to 300 and tq at around 320 to 350.
The intake manifold is a copy of Edelbrock Performer EFI and the headers are 1 5/8" primaries. The only real air restriction I have are the heads which can support up to 400 HP stock.
I made my wire harness over Christmas so that it will plug right into the chassis and new engine.
They harness I used is an '89 Mustang 5.0 and computer.
This harness varies from the Ford Motorsport harness with some connections.
I used schematics from Ford for the Explorer and Haynes manual for the mustang. To me this was the most time consuming part to date. Not really difficult, just slow.
I'll post with more updates as they unfold.

Are the E7's ported? The typhoon intake is a little overkill for the stock heads. I would of suggested some GT-40P's at least with a 351. It should run good but that intake is more for RPM.

wow, your going EFI, good luck, that thing is going to rock  i did my 351 swap with a carb. just to warn you im going to guess your headers are not going to fit, i have manifolds on mine and the cleareance is a big issue.

here is the clearance on the passenger side, it isnt really a good angle

it looks like we built about the same motor mounts

It's not a Typhoon intake. It's an Edelbrock Performer clone. Not RPM, Victor, Typhoon etc.
I had beautiful GT40 heads on my mustang that flowed great. But unfortunately that car was stolen from my driveway. They knew what they were getting, jerks! 10:1 Keith Black pistons, E303 cam, Newly rebuilt T5Z tranny etc., I almost died. I'm afraid to get another Stang yet for obvious reasons. The killer was that I contemplated putting in a theft deterent like fuel pump kill switch only a week before it was taken!
I'm left starting all over again with parts and pieces.
For now I have to limit my purchases and performance levels.

OUch man definatley install whatever theft device you can, alarm, brake line lock, starter kill switch, cheapo stuff that works.... a nice flashing red LED is a good too.....

Hey 351wExplorer, what does your drivers side exhaust clearance look like?
I'll have to trim a little out of the passenger side frame rail for the collector.
By measuring, I'll be very close to the steering shaft on the #6 exhaust header pipe. Might have to put a little ding in it to clear.
I can only measure so much and I'm dying to get it in to see the results of my year in planning.

I'm sorry to hear that happened. I get scared now if my car is out of sight and its not in the garage at home. I thought the only clone PP made was of the RPM manifold. You should have lots of torque either way. :)

So why did you use the Mark 7 AOD????Is it a stronger trans or just better for the weight of the Explorer?????Are you using the stock converter or a higher stall one????

The Lincoln Mark7 tranny was built with the same specs as the mustangs. It had I think 5 clutches and steels in each clutch pack where as the older ones have only 3.
The valve body arrangement was also calibrated differently for mustangs and Mark7's.
I think if I was to get the ideal AOD for the swap, it would have been one from a 4x4 full size F150. It comes stock with a deep sump pan and stronger clutch packs.
I'm just going for reliability, not performance. Otherwise I think I would have had one rebuilt at a performance shop for me.

i can try and find a pic, or maybe take a new one of the drivers side, but my manifold clears preaty good. the only problem is that it is about 1/2 inch or maybe a little more from the rubby bushing in the steering
