Hello everyone, let me first thank everyone who responds for there help and suggestions, I AM STUMPED.
I bought a 2002 ford explorer V-8 with the 5R55W transmission, 80k. Since day one in Feb (cold as I live in NY) of this year the trans would bang very very hard at times into 3rd, only 3rd, sometimes it would not shift into third at first, rpm's climb and then BANG into 3rd real hard. Other times is would seem to go into third and then buck as if it was going in and out of third a bunch of times before staying in 3rd. Sometimes a flashing OD light and a code of 3rd gear ratio incorrect. So, the trans gets rebuilt, problem still there, they end up replacing what was thought to be a sticking valve in the valve body, problem solved, until its 90 degrees or hotter outside and its back! In and out of the shop and finally they pulled the whole unit and replaced with a purchased reman, all sensors and everything, problem still there at 90 degrees ambient or hotter. Wont do it at 88 or less outside, only above 90! Everyone is baffled, everyone! I leave for Myrtle Beach in 2 weeks, 14 hour drive one way! I need this fixed. I have seen many posts with people with the same issue but know one ever posted the fix.
The last attempt was a second ground strap to the transfer case, i have read 4x4 module going bad and trying to put the truck in 4x4 but I don't know as this is very violent. When cooler out the truck shifts fine, no issues with motor etc. Scanners and real time monitoring while its happening and nothing comes up on Snap on tools.
I hope someone out there can help me?
Thank you so much for your time,
Craig

Everyone, it was the PCM computer causing my hard bang shift into 3rd on very hot days above 90 degrees.
I hopt this can help someone else as it took everyone involved 6 months to get this figured out!
