Yes, I bought a 3rd smart key for the Limited with the remote start functionality. It was about $140 plus another $30 for the dealership to program the 3rd key to the truck. They will need all 3 keys to do this properly.

Here is a link to the Ford Parts store, where you can place an order and receive a quote from your dealer instantly. Like Bill stated, you may need all active keys present at time of activation for the 3rd key.

Seni, do you have a part number? I looked up 'key' on that site and it's definitely not the same as my limited key. I want to get a third as well.

I'm interested in a third key as well, but aren't the programming instructions in the Owners Guide? Do you need a dealer to do this?

Like I said, the dealership needs to program all the keys together. I did not see any instructions in the Owner's Manual.

Well to make sure I'm not losing my mind, I double checked this. I looked at the Owners Guide (3rd Printing) that I downloaded from the FLMowner.com website.

On page 155 are the instructions for programming the spare IA Key, and it does state that two other keys need to be present for this to work. If you don't have two other keys, then you do have to take it to a dealer.

So, I think that the only thing that the dealer really needs to do is to cut the spare "mechanical key blade" that's stored inside of the fob.

Still would like to know what the part number for the uncut fob (with transmitter) is, though.

Excellent, you are correct. Good to know. When I needed this, I could not find it. The Owner's Manual is pretty good, but the 'table of contents/index' sucks.

Just to make sure we are all on the same page. When I started the post I was referring to the actual key and remote combo, not the keyless entry fob. I was able to track down the part number for the key and remote combo, however you must be a licensed locksmith to purchase it online. I was able to find a key only for the new 80 gb key we need. It has to have SA on the key. It is ebay auction 370507416276. If you would like to have a key and remote the number is STR-5912560 or 164-R8073. The list price for this is 149.99 expensive. I opted for the ebay auction for the blank key without the remote, I only want a spare programed key. If you have two keys you can program it yourself, just get someone to cut the key.

Thanks for the info bkool. Who cut the new key for you? Can you go to a big box hardware store or do you need a locksmith? Did they cut it from the original key/remote?

Steve1942,

just went to a local hardware store had them cut it, charge 3.50. Used one of the original keys.
Then just programed the key per the owners manual. Works like a charm.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. That looks like what the Owner's Guide call the IKT, I think. DO you have any idea on how/where to buy the IAS (intelligent access something) that the Limiteds come with (The key blade is stored inside the remote)?

My dealer tried to sell me a 3rd key (spare) for $120. Instead, I bought one on ebay for $8, had it cut at Ace for free, programmed it, and it works perfectly as a spare, all for $8!

I just ordered the $8.00 uncut key from ebay, I will get is cut at ACE and then program it myself, I'll report back once I'm done!

I bought a key off of eBay. It was more expensive than $8.00. It had the Ford logo on it. I took it to Home Depot and the cut it for me for free. I then followed the directions on the printed sheet that came with the key and it worked fine.

No Limited = No keyless entry + Push Start?!

Does anyone know where one could buy a switch blade key for a 2011 Explorer? Every time I pull out the key to drive, I'm reminded of how annoying it is that FORD decided to go cheap on not just giving all new Explorers a key fob and push start feature. It's just ridiculous when even most if not all Kia's, for example, have at least push start.

Anyhow since I have an XLT and not a Limited, I'd love to get a switchblade key if possible at least.

P.s. I do love our Explorer thus far though don't get me wrong.

Can anybody tell me what specifications required when I ordering key from eBay for my 2011 explorer xlt.

Out of curiousity, I asked how much to cut a spare key for the remote fob...$60. I said seeya!

Bill, I agree 100%. There definitely needs to be more cross referencing. There have been many times that I gave up on the index and just started flipping through the book. Now I'm basing that on the first printing so I don't know if things have improved since then.
