Hi,

I was under the rear of my truck ( '95 ) replacing the stock A.S. bar bushings with the polyu type and noticed a 3rd shock?/damper? It attaches to the frame and the differential housing. What is its specific purpose? TIA.

Pretty sure you got it right...damper for vibration.

Somebody'll chime in for sure.

Yep, it is a vibration damperner. You can keep it or just yank it out, it doesn't really do anything.

That's right keep forgetting to take that thing off (3rd shock) after the TT and shackles it is pretty much maxed out. I read alot about it with the search feature, and never saw any nehative results. It appears that ford put them on late in the first generation to correct a mid 60's shake. Later in the second gen this problem was corrected with IFS and also a few minor changes to dimensions. The fix which never really worked anyway(3rd shock) was continued on these 2nd gen and from what I read afr pointless. I personally have yet to remove mine to give first hand feedback. Too bad it's cold

You might want to check the lower bushing of that shock. The cast bracket where it mounts on the axle does not compress on the rubber bushing. My bolt was worn 0.3 inch and it rattled. The quickie solution is to switch the bolt with the one on the other end. That one fits in a stamped metal bracket which will clamp down on the bushing.
