If the x-pipe will fit, go for it, but I doubt the glass-packs are factory since since most modern mufflers look like odd shaped tin cans. I mean, if you can make everything fit, go for maybe it will sound good. Post pics up of what you got.

I know the xpipe will fit I just might have to do some slight mods to the piece that goes from small size to the bigger size of the x pipe. And the mufflers seem like a glasspack type deal. They are straight through and from what I can see have perforations inside. Even if they aren't glasspacks they are straight through and therefore offer better flow than a typical chamber muffler. Now, cool bit of information I read. Some glasspack mufflers have louvres to channel the exhaust into the pack, this helps deaden sound and reduces flow.
Now if you turn the muffler around there is less restriction because the exhaust isn't being forced into the louvres, and therefore less sound is dissipated. Kinda cool I think. Some manufacturers just make holes on the inside though so that you get the best of both worlds.

Exhaust done!

Well, after spending two nights, one of which i was up literally ALL night, my exhaust is DONE! It comes down duals from the engine, ups to the new 2 3/4" xpipe with straight-through mufflers, right out back behind the tire. Just have to get some exhaust tipes put on it. Now how do I post some pictures on here? I think i read somewhere that you need to make a photobucket account and then put links to it

All the pictures are there. This project took A LONG TIME! The part that took so long is making the adapters and joints between pipes. At the beginning we had to take an adapter that had the size of my old exhaust (2 1/8") and cut it, then take an adapter that would fit on the xpipe (2 3/4"), cut it, and use a random piece of pipe to go from one size to the other. Then we welded the mufflers to the xpipe and had to make custom bends at the connection to get the pipes to fit as best as possible and at the right angle to get enough clearance over the axle. After the muffler we had to make another connection to the pipes going out back. Yet again, another pain in the butt because we had to weld on pieces of pipe that we could modify to accept the other piece of pipe. We had to heat it, make a custom punch and whack the metal until it expanded enough to fit. Then we had to weld in the bends to get up over the axle. This was a pain because we had to make some quick custom bends without having the right bends in the leftover pipe. So we had to cut out sections and then bend it together and tac weld it to make sure it would fit. The one pipe goes straight back between the shock absorber and the rear sway bar link, and the other comes up and around the shock absorber and then runs beside the inside pipe. They are welded together just where they come close to each other to prevent them from rattling together. There is also a rod connecting the pipes just after the mufflers. We used the stock rubber on the frame at the back as a mount point, and just at the end of the xpipe a rod was welded across and a rubber was welded on there too. The pipes now are just pointing down out the back but as soon as i get some money I will put some tips on it. It sounds AMAZING at an idle and has a great sound when you rev it. The flow is amazing, and has increased power, throttle response, and fuel economy. Makes up for the two sleepless nights! Any questions or comments?

derek u got sound clip

No not yet. Need to borrow someone's video camera. Will get one up on youtube asap

Got my Flowmaster 40 on about a month ago. I still need to put up a video

Just ordered a glass pack. Going to replace the muff with it. I'll post a vid once I get it swapped!

I don't know why, but when the truck is cold the exhaust doesn't sound as good. Once it's warmed up its more throaty and loud. Oh well. Gotta wait to get some exhaust tips on there and then see how it sounds.

I actually signed in for the first time in almost a year just to comment on this. I've moved onto a Mustang GT, but this sounds really good.

What kind of X pipe did you use?
What kind of mufflers did you use?

I built a offroad Y pipe for my explorer when I had it, but this sounds really good.

Alfboy, all these components came from the stock exhaust of a 2011 Challenger.

Here is a picture of what the stock exhaust looks like. I used the mufflers right after the x-pipe. Obviously there was a LOT of modification to do to get it to fit under my truck, and unfortunately not enough pipe to come out each side of the explorer. The round mufflers are a glasspack type of design. I would like to know why it sounds louder and deeper once the engine and exhaust heats up fully. It's wierd. Anyways. I'm waiting to get some exhaust tips, hopefully they make it sound a little louder! I love the noise! :D

First of all, if that's your car I hate you LOL. Second of all, props to you for using piping you already had laying around. Those are actually resonators that help quiet down the car even more. They are pretty much a glasspack design, but are not full blown mufflers.

As for being louder and deeper, I can't answer that. Sounds weird that you'd have that. Are your cats still in, or did you cut them out?

Ahahaha I wish! I'm a Canadian so that nulls out those licence plates. All I did was google image search for it. Friends of the family down the road are the ones who gave me the exhaust when they upgraded their brand new challenger to a 3.5" magnaflow. Seriously they drove it off the showroom floor with 300km on it sometime in January. Thanks though I'm glad someone other than me can appreciate all the work it took to get that all cut and put together and whatnot. Somewhere in the area of 20 hours total. The one night we started at around 6pm and we got it done at...I think 4:30am. That was a long night. My cats are still in because I need to e-test it every two years and its illegal to not have them here in Ontario. That and there's only one cat per 3 cylinders so it's not like it's trying to push a whole hell of a lot through each cat. I passed e-test with FLYING colours so they arent all clogged up either. I know it's wierd though. And it's not like I'm imagining anything either I don't think. It sounds different inside the vehicle from cold engine to warm. Maybe it's from the gases expanding more because they are warmer so there's more volume of gas, and that means that it has to go further down the exhaust before it cools, and that's when it hits the resonators and they cool it down there. Because the gas coming out the tailpipes isnt too warm, but holy hell if you touch those glasspacks you are gonna burn yourself bad. I found that out the hard way when my hand hit the exhaust showing a cop that I actually do have mufflers. :D

haha - very nice! Yes I can appreciate it. When I had a 99 SOHC, I ripped out everything but the manifolds and redid it. The stock Y pipe was redone with mandrel bent 2.5" pipe and the rest was fabbed up so I can easily swap the muffler out with undoing 2 exhaust clamps and a hanger bolt. I ran a ton of mufflers on that truck and loved the Flowmaster Super 40 the most.

I had a high flow magnaflow cat that I could easily bolt it in needed but I never did.

Again, good work! Love seeing people do their own true custom things to these trucks. I have a mustang now so you can easily buy things aftermarket. On these explorers, I had to do almost everything myself.

Yeah the aftermarket world is packed full of goodies for muscle cars. I think they should almost focus more on getting performance parts to the poor people that own gas guzzling SUV's and whatnot. You'd make a ton of money just the same as you do with performance upgrades for muscle cars. There aren't really a whole lot of bold on upgrades for the explorer. That brings me to another question. You said you had the stock y-pipe redone, and congrats for doing all that work. But a little more work makes your life easier in the long run. My old explorer had a y-pipe as well. Why the heck does this one have dual exhaust?!

I just got exhaust tips on yesterday. Will upload a new video asap

Sounds good! It should go slightly deeper once the engine warms up. It's what mine does. I gotta get a new video up on youtube. I got a new engine and 3 inch tips on it and it sounds different than no tips as in my old videos.

Thanks man! Yeah, I did notice the tone going deeper, especially while driving...I love it so far! It sounds a lot better than the Flowmaster I had on my Chevy 4.3... Not as much cab noise. Where can i find your youtube link? Never mind. I found it. lol.
