4.0 Exhaust Clip Thread !

here is a short video of my exhaust. cut out the factory muffler and tailpipe, and stuffed a flowmaster 40 or delta 40 whichever is the louder one, it is single in single out.

they dont make the pro or extreme for the sohc (dual inlet) thats why i went with the vortex

I used a Y pipe. Dual 2.25" to a single 2.5" pipe

Can anyone give me any suggestions on an exhaust with a nice mellow rumble at idle and accelerating, but not loud at all? I had a Flowmaster 40 series (never installed it) but I returned it because it got me thinking.
I've heard some V6 4 runner's and V6 tundras (made before the new body style 07's) with stock exhaust, and it's what I'd really like my suv to sound like. They drive by my house all the time and I love the sound. Pretty loud for stock but not at all annoying in my opinion. Sorry if you don't understand what I'm talking about or have heard it before.

I have a feeling a turbo-type muffler is what you are looking for. Thrush Turbo or Summit's brand should work. For 20 bucks, its worth a shot. Just dont weld it in until you like it. Clamp first and try it out

whyd you return the flowmaster? its really not that loud at all, or mine isnt not compared to anything else i see in my area! I wonder if the 4.0 could ever sound like the infinity/350z v6, i like the way they sound....

I took mine out because it was really loud and I got a ticket. You probably have the delta flow 40..I had the original. Plus I have no cats. I believe the 350's and such use turbo type mufflers. They flow like oem (slows down exhaust flow) as well as fiberglass. There is a read somewhere on the net where turbo mufflers are acutally smaller oem mufflers with less interior "tubes" to slow down exhaust flow results in muffled exhaust

no cats = <3 everything sounds better without cats, i think i want headers and catless h pipe and go with the slp loudmouths, thats what ive decided on so far, i like the kinda hollow throaty sound of the 350z's

Lol, everything is so much louder as well without cats. Remember, we have 4.0 motors (im assuming from your sport tag). They will sound ricey with a bad muffler. I feel slp loudmouths are too small for out motors. They will probably make it sound like a ricer. I would get a muffler thats a bit more "beefy". H pipe will also cause you to lose back pressure=loss in low end torque.

Thats the kind of sound I'm looking to get out of my frontier, since it is based off the same block, but instead of 3.5 its a 4.0. I shall see how close I am on Friday after I get my exhaust done. I was never really a fan of the turbo mufflers, they sound kind of buzzy.

Thats the kind of sound I'm looking to get out of my frontier, since it is based off the same block, but instead of 3.5 its a 4.0. I shall see how close I am on Friday after I get my exhaust done. I was never really a fan of the turbo mufflers, they sound kind of buzzy.

I'm with you on that one. I've only heard one on youtube but it was the only one I could find. Didn't like it too much but that's me. What I could do is maybe look for a used one at some place off a tundra or 4runner but eh. I doubt there will be results. I could look into magnaflow or gibson also. It's a possibility.

Wow I just heard an explample on youtube, did sound a lot like what I wanted when accelerating. Thank you for the suggestion!

I liked the turbo- but then again Im running no cats and an offroad Y. It didnt flow that well which is why I went hooker max flow- mainly for HP. The turbo was quiet but sounded good under accelleration. It was buzzy with cats when I get my truck inspected for a ticket I got, but when I took the cat out it sounded nice.

Just had my exhaust done this morning on my frontier using the Vortex from Cherrybomb, I must say it sounds great. The shop that did the work was the same meineke I went to when I had my sport. Same tech did the install as well. The system looks factory. The sounds is pretty much what I was going for, just a bit on the louder side. Will post up some pics and clips in a few days after I can get a hold of a camera and give it some time to settle in.
