hunter u got sound clip of ur exhaust yet

I am in the process of uploading them now. Heartthrob exhaust is usually straight pipes no muffler, but with muffled exhaust tips. Like having a resonator as an exhaust tip. They usually only sound good on V8s, but I think I have heard a Ranger 4.0 with one. The pipe diameters usually run smaller as well. Will post pics and clips here as soon as they finish loading.

You didn't rev it enough.:D

Sounds really good. Didn't have that rattle type of sound. And Meineke did a really good job. Looks like I'll be going to them also if I ever get this done.:)

Heres a soundclip inside with the windows up going for a normal drive.

Thanks for all the compliments. I am going to be adding as resonator to tone it down and clean up some of the raspyness though.

sounds nice dan do u got dual or single exhaust

sounds good dan

Well, It's a friday night and Im relaxing and bored. Dug up some old pics of the explorer. I found one that might help some people out. This is for people with the SOHC motor who want to run a single muffler but cant find a dual in one. This is a simple way to do it. Magnaflow Y pipe. Dual 2.25" in, single 2.5" out. Note: This was before I had the off-road Y pipe installed.

And when I had duals. Miss the look, dont miss the loss of torque

Alright, just need some quick clarification. I need to do a little exhaust work. Resonator is rattling around like crazy and it is driving me nuts. '99 SOHC. More of a V8 sound would be nice. Basically I want non-ricey sound that doesn't drone since I do a lot of highway driving. From what I gathered I need either the Original 40 Series, 40 Series Delta Flow, or the Cherrybomb Pro. Can somebody look at my needs and select the best one for me. I figure I'll just keep it stock Dual 2.25" inlets and single 2.5" outlet and just have them fab up a new 2.5" tailpipe and leave the resonator out. Again the big thing is NO DRONE and NO RICE! Also, I would have flip the muffler to make it work. Is that bad, since the baffles on the inside are for the flow going the other direction. Would the solution to that be to get this MAgnaflow y-pipe 10758 and gettingt a 2.5" single in/out muffler? Thanks everybody.

Alright. I answered some of my own questions by further reading. I need the Magnaflow y-pipe part #10758. Then I think I want a Flowmaster 2.5" single in/out. My question is I don't see the Original 40 Series anymore. Did they replace it with the Super 40 or Super 44? Will the 40 Series Delta Flow sound the same outside with less drone. Any response would be great so I can get this stuff ordered. Thanks.

on my cherry bomb vortex muffler (88107 ) i didn't need a Y cause theirs are reversible, so u get get a single inlet and dual outlet and reverse it. quite a few people have said mine is the best SOHC they've heard, has good deep/low tone, some resonance, but u can get a tip put on that will help that.

I just went back through the thread and found your video and love it. So to confirm, you just flipped this muffler backwards and welded it up and it fit fine right? I planned on replacing the resonator with piping as well. How is the drone? I noticed that you said around 2500rpm's there is some resonance. That is about 70 mph and cruising speed (I'm on the highway a lot) for me and I don't want a headache. What is a KKM? Any suggestions on a tip. Lastly, I really cannot handle rasp/cackling/popping. If this has that just give it to me straight because that will drive me nuts. Otherwise thanks for the response. You almost have me talked into it! I may order this tonight depending on what you say next.

The flowmaster mufflers is not what you're looking for. They call flowmasters drone masters for a reason. The original 40, or any 40 series for that matter, will drive you nuts with drone; however, you will get that deep v8 rumble you're looking for. It's a trade off I suppose.

For me, I ran the magnaflow Y pipe because I wanted to run a muffler that was single in/single out.

Right now I am running the Hooker Maximum flow muffler. I get a lot of compliments on it. I love it because its only loud under acceleration. Its not as deep as the flowmasters, but its more of a loud and aggresive noise- but only under acceleration. Like you, in the morning at 6 AM i drive to work on highway. At cruising speeds shes silent but she gets loud when I push the pedal. I bought the muffler based on the below chart and I couldnt be happier, I guess if it was a V8 anyway. Im sure it wouldnt be as loud if you are catted though. I am also running an off road Y pipe with no cats and 2.5" pipes from manifolds back

BTW KKM is an intake

As you can see, the Max Flow is pretty quiet at idle and cruising as compared to the other mufflers, but when you get on it, it gets pretty loud! It also has the best performance/sound/price balance of all the mufflers on there. Its a pure straight through design

at hwy speed you can tell its aftermarket but its not loud, the resonance at at 2500 rpms is when your getting up to speed (not getting up to speed fast though, just driving normal). Yes you just reverse the muffler (which is what i did). i don't have a resonator tip on mine, and im not too sure how much it will affect the sound. i'll see if i can get you a vidoe at hwy speed by tonight.... i dont think it sounds raspy/ricery, this is muffler is a little loud (for a v-6) the KKM is an intake by K&N it just replaces your stock air box with a cone filter w/ maf adapter here's a pic

hope this helps.... if you have more questions let me know

Alright so now here is what I gathered as my two best options:

1) Cherry Bomb Vortex or Hooker Max Flow dual inlet with 2.5" piping out the back

or

2) Magnaflow y-pipe with Hooker Max Flow with 2.5" piping out the back

What to do, what to do. Option 1 would be cheaper if I went with the Vortex. Oh, I just looked an the design of the Cherrybomb Vortex and Hooker Max Flow look similar, I think. I could do the 2.25" dual inlets with 2.5" outlet on both. Is there any performance benefit to using the y-pipe and a single i/o? Also Afboy123, you said you used 2.5" offset/center, not center/center? I'm kind of leaning toward option two though now just due to the fact that it is quiet at highway speeds. A video would be great Shortstack if you have time. Everything is stock by the way. Thanks for the info thus far.

And thanks for clearing up that acronym for me. Definitely not new to cars and didn't want to sound like it but figured I'd ask.. Hopefully there will be a Volant in my future.

Alright, I'm back again. I decided I'm going with the stock 2.25" dual inlet with 2.5" outlet. Nothe the question is Hooker MaxFlow or Cherrybomb Vortex. The Cherry bomb is about $20 cheaper. Is the MaxFlow worth the extra money? I'm buying one or the other tonight. Thoughts, opinions?
