4.0 Exhaust Clip Thread !

Well After allowing it a couple weeks to break in it really does sound better, its definitly louder than it was when I posted that last but I will say it is still not very loud. Now Do the cats have the O2 sencer in them or is it farther up the pipe? If so I might go ahead and get rid of them and replace it with the 40, Which leads to another question. Isnt the Super 44 suppose to be louder than the 40?

Not sure what motor you have, but the 4.0 SOHC has 2 sensors before the cats and 2 sensors after the cats.

The super 44 is louder than the super 40, but the super 44 doesnt sound as good. Its not the general flowmaster tone. Its not as smooth. I didnt care for the sound.

A side note: Im loving this super 40. I have gotten 3 compliments on it already on how good it sounds by people I didnt even ask opinions for. This muffler is nice and deep. Fantastic!

Oo ok i was just wanting to make sure if i cut the cats im not messing with the o2 sensors, What I think i will end up doing is cutting the cats and a lil bit later when i can afford it take it back in and cut out the 44 and have them put in a super 40. How much louder is it after the cats are cut out? Its loud on your sound clip but i cant tell how loud cause its close to the camera :D lol

O and by the way its a 95 Explorer with the 4.0L

Ok i crawled up underneith it and i only seen 2 sensors, I seen one off each pipe as it came off the manifolds and that was it. Tomarrow Im going to take it over to a friends house and we are going to unbolt the cats (they are in 1 piece bolted in on both sides) and we are going to hallow them out. The way they are bolted in i would have to cutt off the flanges off both sides and weld them back on so it looks like it would just be easier to gut them. I will be taking the camera along and try to get some pics of the process. also would you happen to know if when you take unbolt the flanges do you have to replace the rubber doughnuts that fit up in to seal it? I dont think you would but I was just wondering if you knew if you did or not.

Ah, thats a good idea. I was going to take this route, but I wanted 2.5" piping after the manifolds so I ended up redoing it all with an offroad Y pipe. I reused the stock seal and it worked fine. It wasnt cracked or anything.

Since your truck is the OHV, Im guessing you would only have the 2 sensors then. Thats awsome that you dont have any after the cats. I do and had to use MIL eliminators. Its louder, but more than anything when I removed the cats it was deeper. I will take another vid today when I get outside again. Ill try to move the camera away a bit.

Ok cool, Here in just a lil bit im going to head over to my buddys house so we can pull em out and gut them. Like I said I will take pics of the process and post em when im dong and get back to the house. I appreciate all your feed back too. :D Odds Are I will problubly go the same route you did and replace the Super 44 with a super 40 in a couple weeks. I want so here the clip you are going to post too, but from the sounds of the ones you posted it sounds pretty good.

Well i just got back. I forgot my camera so sorry no pics ;( it took around an hour to get the cats off and take a piece of Agle iron and rebar and a hammer and beet up the ceramic honeycomb inside. Had to use a pair of pliers to get the wire mesh out but all in all wasnt really that hard. its definitly louder and alot deeper than it was. I now see why you didnt like the super 44. I Think here in a week or two I will take it in and have a 40 series or super 40 put on.

another question, is the super 40 suppose to sound like the DF 40 only louder? just a question.

Well here is my clip of the Flowmaster super 40. Excuse my girlfriend, we were babysitting her nephew and just had to film him in the beginning.

Here's the direct link if you want to watch it in high def

Did you get a check engine light at all? To be the super 44 sounded so sloppy. I ran a original 40 flowmaster before the 44 and it just sounded so sloppy compared to the 40. The original 40 series with no cats will be L O U D. The super 40 is going to be louder than the DF 40. The baffles inside the DF 40 are longer. Its supposed to cut down on the noise and drone more. I personally wanted an aggressive sounding muffler so I went super 40. I like it. I wish the video above caught more bass to the muffler

Here's the inside of the original 40

And here's the inside of the dumb Super 44

and here's the noise chart of each muffler, the original 40 isnt on the chart but is the loudest behind the 1 chambers

I thought the 4.0 SOHC engines only have 2 cats and the V8 motors have the 4 cats? Mine only had 2...

Ya I could tell the mic on the camera was cutting out some of the bass but it gave me a pretty good idea. It sounds good man :D

O and no CHeck engine light it turned on and every thing runs right no warning lights or nothing. You were right though its ALOT deeper than it was before but you put it right when you said they sound sloppy. Im suppose to be getting a check in next week so When I do I plan on going back in and having them put in a super 40. Im like you I want it to sound aggresive and as meen as I can get it. So far though it already sounds alot better, its louder and deeper which is what I expected to get in the first place. I was really disipointed when I had it put on cause it wasnt really that loud and it wasnt that deep so I wasnt impressed. It kidna shocked me cause every other vehicle i have put a Flowmaster on alwasy sounded good, and a buddy of mine from work put a 44 on his 07 Eclipse GT and it sounded wicked so I expected it to sound better than it did on my X.

O and the kid in the video was cute lol he looked like my Nephew lol.

I think the v8s do have 4 I know my buddys mastang actually has 6 cats on his car.

I know my v6 only has 2 though.

well afboy143

my gf bro dad is a mechanic and he looked underneth my x and he said i still got the stock 4 cats on mine. But i wanna like remove 2 of them on my sport.

I will eventually try to get a sound clip of my explorer starting up and taking off i just will have to see when my friend is free so we can use his digital camera.

I got 40 series flowmasters on my 01 sport too but eventually wanna get true dual. Since right now i got single in and dual out with 2 1/2 inch tips.

u must of been lucky afboy143

since urs had 2 cats i wish mine had like 2 as well but i got 4. waaaaaaah waaaaaaah

i eventually will get rid of my 2 cats and leave the other 2 cats on.

O and another reasen why i wanted to gut the stock cats and leave em in are because if for what ever reasen if i get pulled over than if they look up undernieth there it looks like the stock cats are still in place......thier just hallow lol another thing to keep in mind Sam.

That and did you have the V6 of V8 i was just curios.

i have the 4.0 sohc V6 engine

lol well after i posted that i seen it on your sig lol o well....

well here in a a lil bit I will post some vids of my truck, fair warning i used my digi cam and its got the sound but the video runs realy slow for some reasen but you will get an idea on what it sounds like. Sorry its getting dark here so not much to see but o well im ganna post it for the sound, give me about 5 or 10 mins and I will have it up.

hmm might take longer for some reasen its taking its sweet time loading onto my photobucket.
