I just had Flowmaster Super 44 put on my 95 X with the 4.0 and im not to impressed. It sounds alright but its not really much louder than stock and just doesnt sound as aggressive as i expected. I have a buddy with a 3.8L Eclipse with the same muffler and his car sounds meen as hell but for some reasen it doesnt sound nearly as meen :(

Im hoping after it breaks in a lil maby it will get a lil louder. I drove around all day today with it and it seems to be a little louder and deeper now than it did when I first put it on. i know my bro in laws truck was the same way (it got louder as it broke in ) plus his is a v8 so it naturally sounds way hella louder and meener than my xploder.

I had the super 44 flowmaster installed on my truck for a day until I ruled it out because it was so quiet/mellow- I first tested it with the cats on. Another member on here, hunterdan, came to the same conclusion as I did and ended up taking it off of his truck as well. You can do one of two things

-Removing the cats made a louder, but the sound wasnt crisp. I would suggest only doing this if you run the super 40
-Go with the original 40 series muffler if you wish to keep your cats. Sounds hella mean. A few memeber, including myself, can attest to this. If you want to go cheap, buy the thrush welded or V-Flow muffler. Both knock offs of the original 40 series

For some reason, I personally found, cats and delta flow dont mix.

 good thread

Alright after an hour and 200 some posts i have came to my exhaust conclusion. I am going to summit rancing on sunday, i am going to get a 2.25" inlet to 2.5" magnaflow y-pipe. 2.25" is the stock exhaust pipe size on a SOHC correct? (please correct me if im wrong) And i am gettin 4 ft. of 2.5" pipe because i want it to exit lightning style. Now here is my problem. i do alot of city driving and a drive to akron (20 min.) on thehighway. I want something mean but does not drone a hole lot on the highway i still want to hear my music. Which of these three mufflers is best suited for my application, a flowmaster 40, a hooker max-flow, or a cherry-bomb pro?? Any help is very much appreciated and this thread is amazing by the way:thumbsup::salute:

Thanks guys

For the SOHC, the best I have heard is the cherry bomb Vortex. I have yet to hear the Pro on a SOHC.

so a thrush welded will be a 40 knockoff and will sound good on my ohv w/cats remaining in place???

I have a Magnaflow model 11225 muffler and a Magnaflow model 35129 polished stainless tip on my 92 sport with all stock 2.25" piping. I chose the Magnaflow for a couple of reasons. One being cost, I was able to get this muffler for $62 shipped to my door. Also I wanted a deep sound but I didn't want it to be as loud as a flowmaster. So far I love the way it sounds and hopefully it will only get better.

Doesn't sound bad, but it sounds like you have a few issues going on with the motor, sounds like there is a miss or something at idle.

Just got a Super 40 Series flowmaster for christmas and installed it. Details are in my sig. Enjoy

Note: Ive had this muffler installed in the past with cats on and it was much quieter. Please remember I have no cats

That sounds incredible, what muffler are you using? Dual outlet? I am going to be reworking the exhaust on my Frontier soon, and was looking at the Super 40, dual in/dual out.

Thanks! Its very very deep! I love it! I do want to warn thou that I ran this muffler in the past with cats and it was pretty quiet, kind of like the super 44. Without cats its good! Its not loud on the inside but nice and deep on the outside. Its a single in/single out muffler. 2.5". The tip is just a dual tip. I went with a single pipe because when I had duals like you were speaking about getting, I lost too much bottom end.

At this point, I don't want too loud, but noticeable, how is the drone? I am also thinking that the dual in and dual out will be a bit louder than the single in/single out. Another reason for going dual is that this motor actually responds better to less backpressure. But you have the BEST sounding 4.0 SOHC on this board to date. Congrats, and great work!

Well, there is drone at 1800 RPMS- but no where near as bad as the original 40. That thing was just loud. Thank gosh for Delta Flow. Flowmaster engineered their mufflers to "sound" or "drone" at 1800 because most cars cruise at 1500-2000 RPMS. The drone isnt too bad- the girlfriend can tolerate it. LoL.

I was wanting to do a true dual set up with a H pipe because I have spent a lot of time on the mustang 4.0 forums and this seems to sound the best- but didnt due to cash flow. I used to have a dual in/dual out 2.25" flowmaster 50 series muffler and I just remember the bottom end suffering.

And thank you- I aprreciate it. There's nothing like getting into your vehicle after a long day and hearing that sweet sweet sound of a nice exhaust system.

EDIT: I also wanted to add that I understand people love the sound of flowmasters but hate the drone. Here is a few threads that I personally found might help people- but bottom line is- get resonated tips.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-corvette-general-discussion/1352440-flowmaster-drone-solved.html

Here is also a quote off the flowmaster website regarding drone:

"What is the difference between a 40 series and a 50 series muffler?

The 50 series (moderate to mild) incorporates an internal tuning chamber that helps reduce interior sound level in the cab area of your vehicle, and provides a slightly milder exterior tone than the 40 series. The 40 series (aggressive) will generally resonate or “drone” inside the vehicle, around 1800-2000 rpm and again, around 2400-2600 rpm. The performance characteristics of the 40 and 50 series are the same, so it’s simply “a sound decision”.

Well After allowing it a couple weeks to break in it really does sound better, its definitly louder than it was when I posted that last but I will say it is still not very loud. Now Do the cats have the O2 sencer in them or is it farther up the pipe? If so I might go ahead and get rid of them and replace it with the 40, Which leads to another question. Isnt the Super 44 suppose to be louder than the 40?
