Can anyone tell me the stock hp rating on a 1st gen. 4.0? Within this forum I've seen 130hp, that sounds kind of low. An engine rebuilder told me 170hp.

yeah that makes sense, I wasn't thinking about the difference in flywheel and rear wheel hp. Thanks

My 97 4.0 OHV put down 122hp at the rear wheels, it was stock at the time except for a K&N filter. Just installed flowmaster cat-back......plan on checking hp again soon.

forget the HP

forget the HP ratings.....torque rating is where it's at, and the 4.0 OHV does have a good torque rating at a very usable rpm! Granted the engine is not high on horsepower, it's torque is very good. That is why these trucks pull well (up hills etc...) You will notice that ford engines usually have lower horespower ratings than competitors, yet the torque is usually better and at a much lower rpm.
