Well, I did a search on dual exhaust, and I noticed alot of you V8 guys have done various systems on you're trucks.

I am getting ready to run duals on my '99 XLS 4.0L OHV. Any of us 6 Cyl. guys ran duals? If so, what systems did you use? What sounded the best, etc?

On my Bronco, and most of all my other trucks I've owned, I ran a Flowmaster 40 Series, dual out. It's always sounded good with my V8 rigs.

My Bronco has a I6, and it has a Dual in, Single out Magnaflow Cat, into a Single in Dual out Flowmaster 40, exiting at either corner of the rear bumper. It sounds great, and has an awesome growl to it, but the I-6 is a much bigger beast than our 4.0's.

Any reccomendations? Thanks Guys.

BTW, Those who do have dual pipes, How were they ran? There's alot of constricted space under there, I'm assuming at LEAST the spare tire's gotta go.

have a 2000 XLS 4.0 SOHC and have been wondering the same thing. right now she has a stock exhaust with single in single out and wonder if i'll loose any power or anything going to single in dual out flowmaster 40?? the look of dual exhaust is HOTT and the Flow 40 has that GROWLLLLLLL that every X should have.......

For the OHV you are not going to want to run a true dual setup. A seperate exhaust pipe from each header all the way back to two mufflers. It won't provide enough back pressure for the engine. If you want duals you'll have to run two pipes off of a single dual muffler. You'll want to use 2.25" inch pipe for the OHV and 2.5" inch pipe for the SOHC.

I just went down today and did mine in true duals, but it's only a temporary set up. It's not a newer X but it's a 4.0 6 cyl. From the manifolds I ditched the Y pipe, went with 2.25" pipe into Dynomax Super Converters brought it out on the outside of the frame rails between the body and the frame, tacked in a pair of Thrush perforated core glasspacks and turnouts right in front of the rear wheels kinda tucked up but still obvious. It sounds good, nice deep tone, but not as loud as I'd like. I'm planning on headers, same cats, a H pipe, and Patriots 70" length shielded side pipes. Seeing as I'm in a 2wd and I'm looking at a 3"/4" drop, I don't think I'll be burning my legs.

pics 93ProjectX ?? maybe a sound BYTE?? lmao i so badly need to get my exhaust done :( :(

so i can use a single in dual out Flow 40 and not loose back pressure and my side exits then?? WOOOOHOOOO time to save up some $$

Thanks for the tip, but I wouldn't run true duals on anything less than a well-modded engine anyway.

Basically, I am going to do a Single in Dual out setup, just trying to figure out what Muffler I should go with. Im not sure I want to go with the Flowmaster 40, as I said in my Orig. post, I Have run that set-up on at least 5 of my rigs in the past, and that's my current setup on my Bronco. I don't have alot of experience with the smaller V6's like the 4.0, so I'm looking at ideas for a setup for the X.

I have only ever run true duals on one rig, and that was an '87 Suburban, and I would have rather had a Y-Pipe somewhere in that system.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Yes, A single in - Dual out Flowmaster 40 would be perfect for you. This may be what I end up running as well.

Performance wise, you will not notice a HUGE change, but it will give you the sound you're looking for. Just remember, you'll never get a 4.0 to sound quite like a 302, It's still going to sound like a 6 cyl.

I agree, but mine is VERY close to a small V-8 sounds wise!

and for the OHV, as already stated, DO NOT run true duals, your loose all back-pressure and subsequently bottom end.

Ad for a sound idea, check this link. I run a Super 40

How about factory exhaust to the cat, and then a Y pipe, as opposed to a muffler?

Think that would just sound cheap and crappy?

if your talking about a muffler-less system, I wouldn't do it if i were you.

My Super 40 is only a 2 chamber muffler so the sound is largely unaffected.

In other words my exhaust's sounds is about the same as a straight-pipe's. It resonates alot and its veryy annoying at highway speeds.

If i were you id go for a 40 Series Delta Flow, or a 50 Series Delta Flow

Currently On my OHV sport, I'm not running a muffler, but have to 90 degree elbows clamped together to run it out to the passenger side then exit in front of the rear tire with a nice stainless tip. It is only temporary until I can find exactly what muffler I want. I had/have a 40 series flowmaster in the garage, but took it off trying to get a different/better sound. Now, I do a lot of driving everyday (50 miles or so), mostly highway, and the resonance inside is no worse, maybe even better than when I had the full flowmaster exhaust on. I can have a normal conversation, except when I step on it. Now it does get loud, but it sounds good. I tried different positions of the the tip of the pipe, and from what I found, if the pipe exits outside the body the resonance inside is not that bad at all, but if it were just open pipes underneath, then it really resonated to the point of giving me a headache within 5 minutes. As for low end, its there, can still spin the tires when I want. I may have to borrow My girlfriends camera to get a sound clip of the exhaust and how I have it routed. Believe it or not, some of the little imports with fart cans are STILL louder than my truck. As I said, this is just temporary until I can figure out what muffler I really want to stick on my truck. I am thinking either IMCO/Cherrybomb extreme, Flowmaster Super 40, ebay copy of IMCO extremeor something from borla or Corsa, though I haven't heard a 4.0 with either of the last two.

Dan

my super 40 exits under my spare tire area, not out the back, thats where my resonance somes from!

SOrry for the late reply, but I'll get some pics up as soon as possible. I'm on a budget right now as far as the build, and I figure I'll use the libraries computer to post everything and use what I don't spend on parts for the X. :D I got some pics at Costco where the old lady works, I'm just waiting to pick them up tomorrow. As far as it sounding exactly like a small block v8, no, but deep and not much resonance, it's fine for me and aggressive, but I wonder about putting flame throwers on it just to add the edge to scare those ricers a lil.
