4.0 = Sluggish?

The 4.0 do feel sluggish compared to any high performance car. Driving my camaro and explorer is a whole lot of difference.

I am willing to bet it is the gears. Mine came with the factory 4.10's and it screams with the 235/75's but I am fixin to lose a little umph when I mount the 31's. You might also invest in an aux tranny cooler this will help keep your tranny running in top shape.

If you have ATF in your vacuum lines, Pay a local shop to replace the defective transmission modulator valve.
(Its cheaper than you think, $100 plus parts) Its a pain in the A** to DIY.

TPS mod- Dial it in to .96 VDC.

Throttle cable mod- Attach a couple of tie straps to the slack on the cable under the dash.

Just search the site, there is more specific info on all these things.

Yeah Im not too sure about NAPA, I never checked... I checked a few small part shops that didn't have the right ones, and Part Source which gave me a dumb look when I told them what I needed. NAPA seems to be a more professional place then those two, oh and canadian tire didn't know what I was talking about when I mentioned it either. NAPA might I'm not sure. I ended up going to the dealer and spent 8$ CDN per clip. Rip off I know, but I had no choice. Save the clip (I didn't) and show NAPA and most likely then not they will have it. Good luck

P.S. That's if it does break, one of my clips didn't even break so you may have better luck then me

I believe I already broke 1 clip. On the rear side, the fuel line pulled right off. When I went to reattach the old filter, it just slides on, but doesn't lock. ( I was reattaching the ol one cuz I can't get the other side of it off)
Also, I started the car. No fuel leaks, but now there's a "hiss" coming from the fuel filter when I shut the car off. Also, the idle is poor.
I think I broke one of the clips., but I don't think there was ever one in there to begin with, one side of the ff just pulled right off with very little effort. No leaks, just a hissing noise at the fuel filter when turning the car off. This just strarted when I tried to replace the ff.
Also, are the clips hard to replace?

Also, are the clips hard to replace?

They are very easy to replace. They come 3 to a pack and you will need the 10.5mm. You just pry out the old ones and squeeze the new ones together and push them into the line until they lock in place. I just replaced mine last week with the new filter.

Cool, what exactly should I ask for?
Fuel line retaining clip?

Do you think all the hissing and rough idle is due to the broken clip? It must be, right?

That is what I asked for. They were in the Help section with the door knobs and what not.

Fuel line retaining clips is what you ask for

http://www.fmsiinc.com/fuel-retainer-clips.htm

number 3202 and 3203 is what you're looking for (see picture on website, wierd to describe)... assuming it's 10.5mm as stated above (Im not exactly sure but I think he's right), 3203 is what you would be looking for... the chart at the top of the site even lists them for FORD TRUCKS.

Wow thanks for the link with the pics!
So 10.5 mm, huh?

If I look in the fuel line, should I be able to see the clip?
I honestly think one was missing before I even started, is that possible?

Not sure about the hissing, Im not super with cars I just know some... Did you put your ear or something up to the fuel filter and make sure it's coming from there? It's possible that the clip flung out of the line when pulling out the filter (that's what happened to me, and I found the clip later after struggling wondering why the filter won't stay in).

If the filter pushes in but doesn't click in and can just be pulled right out, the clip is not there (pretty sure)... I don't know why it is not leaking fuel tho because mine leaked bad when I ran it without the clip.

Anyways, the best way probably too look if the clip is there or not is to take a flashlight and aim it in the fuel line and look. If you can't see it, its probably gone. I'd probably have to be there to tell you what the problem is, these guys on these forums are a lot more experienced then me so I can't give you a deffinate answer sorry.

Thanks for all the help.
I still need to figure out how to get the damn other side off.
It's been pouring out all day. I definitely need to go buy a clip or 2 though

4.0 = **** and get. do a tune up replace the fuel filter and hope to god that you have 3.73 gears. if u have 3.27 then it will seem to have no balls at all
or worse you could have the 3.07 gears... and I agree with the fuel filter replaceme:thumbsup: nt..

could the hissing at the ff be that it's sucking air because of the missing clip?

That's what I was getting at.
That's what I figure it is. I can't believe there's no fuel leak.

Well I was lucky enough that my tool fit the filter, I can feel your pain when I realized the line from the filter broke off into the gas line. I would suggest bending up and down untill the darn thing breaks. Then get a pair of needle nose pliers and take one end and shove it in the line then push it down and pull the remaining crap out of there. then replace the clips if necessary

Guys, this thing is still a slug.

From a dead stop, it accelerates great. It's fine all the way up to 50 or so.
However, on the highway, I need to put the pedal to the floor before I can feel the truck accelerate. If I have the pedal even a 1/2" from the floor, the truck will SLOWLY (very slowly) accelerate up to where i want it.
When the accelerator pedal is on the floor, it downshifts and speeds up just fine.

BTW, the hissing I had turned out to be a vacuum leak.

Sounds like it's not dropping out of the OverDrive Lock-up soon enough.
