I've discovered an oil leak on my Explorer... 98 4.0 SOHC... It appears to be leaking between the oil filter adapter and the block... Is there an o-ring in there? Can it be removed without removing the exhaust pipe that runs past there?

For a few months I thought it was the rear main leaking because that's where it was dripping from, but I discovered oil dripping from the oil filter at the last couple of oil changes, so I thought I might want to look a little higher up the block... It appears to be oozing out between the right angle adapter that the filter hangs from and the block itself.

Thanks guys!

I actually have a similar question, myself. I possibly have a SLIGHT leak. I can see the residue on my tranny. However I actually do not see it coming out. Maybe it was overflow or something. KEEPIN THE FINGERS CROSSED!

The typical oil filter adapter should have an o-ring and a through bolt holding it onto the block. I hadn't looked at my 4.0's, so I can't say whether I've seen a bolt to tighten. Try to find the bolt and snug it up a little.
