My dad asked me to replace the timing chains in the 2002 explorer he just bought. He brought it over and sure enough it rattles bad. Yesterday I pulled the engine out and am now trying to make a list of every single part needed. I've been searching tons of write-ups and while there is plenty of info on the assembly itself, there is tons of discrepancy on the parts. This is a 4x4 model, and I am fairly certain it has the balance shaft. I am looking at Cloyes part # 9-0398SB, which seems to be everything I need for the timing chains themselves, but I want to double check. The descriptions always list them as "front", however, I see 3 sets of chains in the pictures. It appears it may come with a new jackshaft plug, is this the case? I do not see any bolts, and it seems I will need multiple TTY bolts for the jackshaft. What bolts need to be replaced? Lots of people recommend the tool kit to keep the camshafts in time, but I see there is a fairly simple way to do it without a $300 kit. It appears that as long as the crank is at TDC (key pointed up), mark on the balance shaft is pointed at the crank, then the camshafts simply have to have the slots level with the surface of the heads.
