Ok so i have a 2000 explorer i recently changed the back guide since it was broken in a million pieces.(such a pain) the rattling stopped. Next day i turn it over and heard a rattle. so i asked a buddy mechanic said should replace the tensioner. so i got both the front and back. Replace both of them but now it rattles alot more.... should i place the old ones in or should i change the front one back since it was not rattling on that side and now it sounds like it is.... please help. this car is for the wife...:(

You probably need to change the front chain guides now. If the guide is already cracked, pulling the tensioner out lets it fall apart the rest of the way. It probably needs it anyway if the back one already gave out. If you can hear the noise coming from the left front cassette area, it's time to open it up. You really should check carefully for pieces in the oil pan too (and everywhere else). They can plug up the oil pickup and starve the engine for oil. Also double check that you don't have any rattle from the rear guide.

OK. i will have to check that out the front guide is not hard to take out so that's fine. might as well change it. it just a pain...hopefully that's it.
thanks bud.

primary tensioner failed?

If the original primary (crankshaft to jackshaft) chain tensioner is still in your 2000 and there is more than 150K miles on the odometer it has also probably failed. See SOHC V6 Timing Chain Inspection & Repair

well it was the front tensioner.....after all. i guess the new one that got was faulty. took it back got my $ placed the old one in and it runs like a champ.... check the front casset and it in good shape... is should of never change the front one since it was ok the one that was faulty was the back one ... but all is good thank.:thumbsup:

Which brand tensioner did you use (the bad one)?
