4.0 Timing Job / Motor Rebuild x 3

I’m so grateful for you guys help and participation! I wasn’t gonna be one of those guys who doesn’t respond with a simple thank you !! It was great working with you guys. It’s been a good 6-7 months I guess. Well after that engine swap I must have had a hose start working its way off and I didn’t know it had come off. Ran it about 1/4 mile hot and cracked the walls in between all cylinders on 1 side. Out the motor came and into the scrap pile. SOOOO, upon putting in this current motor, after I felt confident to fire it up, I went to engage into drive and I had nothing, but gave it some gas and it barely moved after a few seconds. I noticed a loud clanking sound when running and once I cut it off. So I pulled it back out thinking the motor was bad possibly. Well I DID NOT tighten all 4 of the flywheel to TC nuts !! The TC was wobbling and making some noise inside it. I have extra TC, so away that one went to scrap. Another one going in and seated correctly. But before I install the motor and mate, the torque converter bill housing to the back of motor. I am wondering if I could have messed up the pump behind the torque converter inside the transmission? Or by having those nuts loose on the torque converter was it, not producing enough pressure to engage the gears because those nuts were really loose and there was probably a three-quarter inch of play in the torque converter. The transmission pump is one thing that I don’t have extra of should I just go with what I think and go ahead and make them up and hope and pray because if it’s the pump I’m gonna have to do it all over again !! This is number #6 pull and resinstall of motor !! Thanks in advance and I am invested at this point , way passed ignorant for going this far. I bought it new in 04, I just don’t want to let go yet !!

I'm in the same boat as you. Force yourself to let it go to move forward.

Dang!!!

These battles can get pretty intense
However each one is a learning experience

If you screwed up the front pump on that transmission you would likely have a large atf leak
Usually the pumps get screwed up from jamming the torque converter in there too hard
You did the opposite you had it too loose

How many miles on this trans now?

I understand. Well I didn’t have any leaks in or around the bell housing / TC area or anywhere else. I did get a big leak when I didn’t have my trans tilted up and gravity took over. I got the TC seated in there correctly and want to fill with fluid and start putting the motor back in, just scared I’m not gonna have any pressure again, for the gears to engage. I’m about sick of buying $75 worth of fluid and misc, every time I pull the motor or a line off. I did read that if those nuts aren’t tight , they’re won’t be any pressure built up for the gears to engage. Which is exactly what happened. There’s 239,000 on trans. No issues previously.

Crapshoot always Re installing a 240k automatic
But we have to do what we have to do

You are installing the converter into the trans and then stabbing the whole trans to the engine now days correct?

Upon final bolt up it should pull the converter forward 1/2” or so, this is how you know stabbed it properly

I did a pretty good write up on installing a v8 automatic into a ranger
The same process applies for most of these trucks if you want to see it
It is in the 07 ranger thread in my signature

Clean/ new trans fluid can be re used when things like this happen. Collect in a large clean container and then strain it through a paint filter. Mercon v is too expensive not too
Adding a drain plug to the pan really helps with this situation

I have bee seating the TC in the housing and trying to line up the little threaded bolts in the flywheel holes and reaching my 6’5” self up into the starter hole with a headlamp , barely seeing the threaded part coming through. Then I start the nut. Problem last time I starter 3 and tightened 1. It was late and I was happy to hit the hole for once :) So after more inspection and worry about the TC and pump issue that I may or may not have. Had to know , I wasn’t gonna go through all this again. I finally got the pump out, trans is still in truck. I noticed the front seal was leaking , so I went for it. Got it finally. … All looked good. I opened the pump and the 2 gears that work together looked fine until I saw a crack all the way through the 11 teeth gear. This trans would have been a ticking time bomb for sure. Pump may not be my problem cause of that crack, but still could be the filter in pan. I’m changing that once my gears and seals are put in , then pan and gasket. I wonder if I had a no go cause I didn’t fill my torque converter full of trans fluid or because those 4 nuts weren’t tight. I’d think that would build pressure if the TC was working properly. At least I found the crack in the gear, good that the extra work may have been worth it and saved me a big headache in the near future. I have all my new fluid that I drained in a clean bucket as back up. I got 12 qts coming thanks to Amazons deal of the day. 12/ $84 free shipping.

I will put some quarts in TC this time and make sure I have it seated correctly and the output shaft end is flush with the housing. Tighten all 4 and equally. I pray it will drive away with me in it !!

Stabbing the motor to the trans , cause the trans is in the truck and being supported by Jack stand. I lower the motor to the bell housing with that stupid flex plate wanting to fall off every attempt. lol.

Can use some duct tape to keep the scatter shield in place so it doesn’t fall off the dowls

Keep up the good work!
