I want to swap out my 150,000 mile 4.0 with a 5.0 from a mustang in my 91 Eddie Bauer. Do I need to change my tranny or just the bell housing? What companies make kits for this swap?

I wouldn't put the A4LD behind anything more than a V6! As for the 5 spd, it may be ok but it's questionable. Dependant of course upon your driving style. The fact that you're wanting to drop in a V8 suggests that you like power, much like myself. My '91 EB 4X4 has 182,000 with a Vortech supercharger, Superchips custom chip, Flowmaster cat-back etc... I despise the A4LD, the ratios are too low(numerically) in my opinion. It shifts very smooth but thats about the only good thing I can think of on it's behalf. Whatever you do, just do it right the first time and be done with it.

scott - How in THE heck did you get 182,000 miles out of an A4LD? Mine in my Aerostar died quickly and painlessly at 110,000. Do you use synthetic ATF? Did you add an extra cooler?

Pete,
I have 172,000 on our 92 explorer. This is still the first motor and tranny. We have put 30k on this rig in just the last year. The only code/problem I have is there is a bad solinoid(sp?) in the tranny (in the pan). Next time I change the tranny fluid I'll change the solinoid and the vacuum modulator (just to be safe). I change the fluid every 10-15k miles. We don't have a tranny cooloer and we are in Arizona (Tucson) where we hit 100+ days every year but it doesn't have over heating probs... I do change the belts, thermostat and coolent every year.
