98' sport SOHC
so, ah. if i wanted to swap my 98 x-sports motor to a similar year of 5.0, what all would be entailed? Would it be possible to just swap th computers, or is that too easy. Would i still be able to use trans, or does that go too? If any one has done a simular mod, i would really appriciate pics. and afterwords what could i sell the 4.0 SOHC(90k) for? would really be thankfull for the help. :shoot:

The tranny isn't the same, you need a 4r70w. The transfer cases aren't the same also, if your 4x4. You'd need the computer, and wiring harness fromthe donor truck. Then the smaller items like driveshafts, brackets ect.

^that's why this is not done (mostly). It would be cheaper and a lot less headache just to buy a used '98 with a V8.

Use the search feature. There have many members here who have done the V-8 swap and there are some really good write ups on it. But it is true that most V-8 swaps are done to first generation (91-94) explorers that didn't have a V-8 option from the factory. For a second generation (95-01) it would be much easier to just get a different explorer that already has a V-8 from the factory. From what I can tell, the V-8 models have absolutely horrible resale value right now. I guess with gas prices as they are, the soccer moms realized that they don't need V-8 power to get groceries. I bet you could pick a V-8 explorer up for cheap right now. Oh, and welcome to the board! :)

I was just reading your post again and I see that you have a sport. Unfortunately Ford never made V-8 sports. So if you want a V-8 sport you have to do it yourself. I would recomend selling your current sport and buying a first generation sport to do the engine swap. V-8 swaps are fairly common among 1st gens, so there are plenty of conversion parts availible. The H.O. 5.0L from the early 90's mustangs works really well in first gens. That and the 1st generation explorer wheels better than the 2nd generation explorer.

Notice: All of the above was written by a very proud 1st generation owner who will never trade his 1st generation sport for anything and therefore may be slightly biased towards the 1st gens. :D  :D

alternitive?

great, thanks for the help. i do love this truck though, so im looking to keep it. i know a guy who is pro when it comes to the computer, so im not worried about that. on the other hand, didnt the tarus sho come with a simular, higher perfomance motor. i do realize the aftermarket for these is very small though. how does that one sound?
also, if i did the v8 swap, what king of price range if i do it my self?

If your talking about the supercharged 3.8 in the SHO then it shares nothing with and doesn't even look like the 4.0 in your explorer, however, I hear that the 3.8 is basically a 5.0 missing two cyliders....
