SOHC 4.0 to 5.0

I am at work and don't have a lot of time to be searching... so could you please explain the 4406 swap please...?? Thanks in advance

Step 1 - Remove stock BW 4405 AWD t-case
Step 2 - Throw it away or use it as a boat anchor
Step 3 - Install BW4406 t-case out of an F-150
Step 3a - :hammer: to get some sheetmetal to clear the massive case
Step 3b - grind to get t-case to clear sheetmetal
Step 3c - cut hole in floor for manual t-case shifter to pop through, otherwise mess with a whole bunch of wiring to get auto case to work
Step 4 - install 97-2002(?) Expedtion rear drive shaft from a 5.4L vehicle
Step 5 - install 97-2002(?) Expedtion/F-150 front drive shaft

Step 6 - drink a beer and (later) go enjoy your V8 with 4HI AND 4LOW!

Even though the ideal time to do the 4406 swap would be when I swap the 4.0 to the 5.0, but I don't think that I will have the money or time for that. I will see what I can do. What are the pro's vs. cons for 4WD vs AWD? I don't see why the 4WD is so much better.

The 4wd is selectable meaning you can choose 2wd, 4x4 4lo 4hi. AWD is great if you live where it snows but you have no choice. I believe the ratios are 70 rear and 30 front if remember right? and 4x4 has 50/50 Just depends what you want to do

Really... I think I like the AWD. Would the factory case be okay for like 350 hp?

okay well Im no expert on trannys Ive blown up so many. But from what everyone says on this board the 4406 is stonger and can handle more power/abuse. I guess it has to do with what you plan to do, I plan to do the 4406 swap eventually, Would love to be able to do a burnout!

ya those tires are expensive

This is what I see:

1. Someone with hi-def camera in front of you on the driver's side.
2. That someone with the camera needs to be squatting low when they take the pic.
3. You do the burnout and crank the wheel to the right (if the picture taker is on the driver side)
4. Slightly let off the brakes and let the picture taker take your picture

I just totally hijaked my own thread!! LOL

Well I will be the Air Marshall and land this plane safely haha Well Ya I will post that up as soon as I get it swapped. But I think its worth it. the 4406 has many advantages you will probably thank yourself later. and Like Xan and I believe other said you might as well upgrade the 5.0 while it is out, TM headers as you know, I did a write up on a 70mm tbody swap from a mustang, cam, lifters etc..
maybe intake spacer stuff like that. its alot easier if the engine is out of the car

"I don't see why the 4WD is so much better."

AWD = sucks power, gas, tires, cv axles, steering rack, u joints and more
the AWD t case in the 5.0L trucks is a 70/30 split, meaning it sends 70% power to the rear, 30% to the front. This is not a true AWD system like you are used to, meaning it does not sense the wheel that slips and send power to the wheel that grips.

The AWD is great in the snow, it is okay on the street.
There are trucks on here with over 350+ RWHP that still use the AWD t case, it can take the power for a while.

The advantages of the selectable t case are obvious, MPG, tire wear, power for passing, 4hi and 4 low, the 4 low is a MONSTER low range.

I personally think the 4wd 4406 t case was the best idea ever for these trucks, it makes them feel like a truck not a soccer mom mobile, the MPG, power and gains off road make the conversion pay for itself.

But thats just me, its not for everyone!

Well Jamie do you like AWD or not, LOL.
When you go hunting parts, look for the spindles rather than knuckles. Spindle is the proper term, how they should be listed when parts hunting. The common term is knuckle.

If you do need spindles, try to find them from a 2001+ Sport Trac or Sport. Those have 1" larger rotors. Good luck,

I Like AWD (in a Subaru or Audi), I prefer 4x4 (in trucks)

:)

I agree, the AWD has a small niche where it's better. My mail vehicle would be better with AWD, that's what I originally planned before learning how much trouble it would be. The A4WD BW4406 will be best for my Mountaineer eventually, having the front not locked to the rear will be nice.

Back to the topic, if the total cost for the truck is near or under $1000, I would want to buy it back. Regards,

Thank you for the good info. I am still waiting to hear from the insurance company.
