Has anyone rebuit their 91-94, 4.0 with performance parts. I am interested in doing some upper engine mods like, roller rockers, cam, perhaps some head work and was wondering if anyone knew of a source to use for parts. Since the 4.0 has been around for a while I would think there is stuff out there but I have not found anything yet. Thanks in advance,

Chad

Thanks for the address! I have a set of their injectors and I like the prices that they have.

Chad

Yikes! Like the prices?????

I have heard alot of good stuff about Vanir, but never prices!!!!

Well stock injectors were 70-85 EACH and they sold an entire set of matched high flow for 220 for all six. That price I liked! Have you bought any of their products?

Vanir Tech. is a great site for the 4.0, or should I say use to be a great site for the 4.0. I know Sven Pruett, owner and operator of Vanir, and he has all but completly shut off the public side of their operation. They still have a few things on their page but if you'll notice alof of stuff is missing.
Now not to endorse my own site or advertise, please let me know if I'm over stepping my bounds here guys, but I'm in developement of my own 4.0 internet business. I have over 9 years of experience working with, on, and modifiing not only the OHV 4.0 but the SOHC as well. In order to keep the peace I won't post the URL of the site but its coming along nicely.
As for the parts you listed here's my take on that.....

I have the roller rockers, they suck!! I've sold 4 sets of these and every set I've had to send back and even then when I got them back they had to be modified to make them work properly. For the $400 your gonna pay for them you can get a set of reworked stock rocker arms with hardened tips for about $150 less that will bolt directly on.

The camshaft is really a application type deal. If your gonna drive it every day and are just looking for improved torque through out the RPM's range and not looking to have a chip then go with the Comp Cams 49-410-8 or as I call it the 410 cam. Now if your looking for an all out performance camshaft and also plan on having a custom chip made then the 49-422-8 or 422 cam is a good selection. The main thing with it is is requires a bit more computer modification, not to mention it doesn't idle as well.
Now both of these camshafts require longer pushrods so you'll need to contact Smithbros. pushrods to get these, they're around $75-$95 depending on what grade you select. I like to use them because they've done alot of work with Sven on the 4.0 pushrods and know what your looking for rather then just some pushrod company.
Also don't forget that with the 410 cam you may get away with using the stock valve springs for a little while but you'll really need to upgrade to dual springs. With the 422 it's a requirement.

Porting a polishing is a great improvement for the 4.0 on the cylinder head but you really need to address the lower intake first. This is one of the great bottle necks of the 4.0. If you do port the heads on the pre-98's don't remove the exhaust bumps in the ports, you'll find holes underneatht them ;).

Most importantly for anyone, don't overlook the basics first. If your wanna do a camshaft or port work then make sure your engine can use it. Do all the bolt on's first, mass-air, TB, headers, free flowing exhaust, you know the basics. Then address the internal components. Also you'll need to address the condition of your engine. If you have 170,000 miles on your 4.0 then its probably not too benificial to install freshly worked heads or new camshaft only to blow out your rings. Think before you mod!! haha, Later Doug904.

4.0 Performance

Doug, WOW thanks for the info. I have done a few of the bolt ons and I am really wanting just a bit more from the engine. I have a feeling that the pushrods are mushroomed or the lifters are going cause I have some lifter noise. Most fords that I have had, have that same noise but it has gotten worse in the recent months.

Having said that the truck drives great and I do not have any issues with the motor that I know of. I have about 93K on the truck and regular maintenance has always been done correctly.

I dont want to get anyone in trouble either but if I could get some additional information on your parts that would be great! You could email or PM me. I have done so far: Jet Technolgies chip, KKM intake, BBK throttle body, Direct Hits igition, Larger fuel injectors, cat back exhaust and switched to full sythetic fluids. I think that is about it. The milder of the two cams sounds more to my liking because I will still have to pass the sniffer. Thanks again,

Chad

could you send me the address to your site or some info on your parts and prices?

Thanks alot

Doug904, I too would like the URL. If you would please email or PM me that would be great.

Doug,
I am also interested in your site. I want to build a motor over a 6 or 8 month period and I would like about 200 to 225 horse power. Would it be easier/cheaper to just get a SOHC 4.0?

Swapping a SOHC in a 91 wouldn't be easier. You'd be doing darn near the same thing as swapping a 5.0 in with all the wiring needed and the new exhaust as well.

Getting 200-225 flywheel HP from a 4.0 is obtainable in N/A form. Using a nicely ported set of heads and intakes, along with a Comp Cam. Also you'll need all the bolt ons headers, TB, MAF, and exhaust cat back system. Now all of this would get you where you wanna be on a fresh engine with good compression. Putting all of this on an older engine wouldn't do much for ya.

As a good rule of thumb I always do a compression test on an engine before I do any kinda internal work. If ALL the cylinders are above 125psi and within 10% + or - of each other then its good and will hold it. But if not then you'll need to start looking into bottom end components.

Doug,
Yea thats what I figured. I was thinking about going with the 422 cam and a custom chip. Would I be losing some bottom end with the headers? I already have a custom cat back system and I seemed to have lost a little on the bottom. Also, what about ignition. I've read that the stock one is as about as good as it gets. I would also like your URL. Thanks

The stock ignition is good for any naturally aspirated 4.0 combo. Its really good for up to arund 300hp in any trim.

Yes, you will loose more torque with headers and the 422 cam but you will gain more HP threw out the RPM range. A custom chip will help fine tune the combo to give you the best of both worlds. I like Superchip myself but check locally and see who you may have available, Diablo's really starting to come along.

Doug, are you listening? I have another thread related to a camm and heads. Any input?:redexp:

Here is what you need?

Whoa! SH@T! That's the supercharger on top of that SOHC 4.0 .... are they testing it or what?

I will be sporting one of Explorer Expresses Super Chargers on my Explorer Very soon. I can't wait to feel that power! Grrrr

The above pictured 4.0 supercharger set-up on a stock SOHC in a 01' ranger put out 247 RWHP and 290 FT/lbs of Torque. This was a stock engine, stock MAF, stock computer and stock air box.

Doug,
Do you have an idea on the numbers before the S/C?
