I have a 2002 EB Explorer 4.0L SOHC which broke a valve spring, tore up the rocker and bent a valve. Not to mention all of the other fun things that happened when the spring broke....

My question is this... I was told that when I replace my engine, that I should also replace the intake because the possibility of broken valve train parts being lodged in there. Does anyone here have any experience or recommendations on weather or not I should really worry about that?

A New intake from the dealer is $300+....

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I had the exact same thing happen to me a year ago. Spring snapped, dropped the valve letting it hit the piston and bending it. broke the valve guide in the head so it had to be replaced.

I learned the hard way about the intake thing. I personally always blow them out with compressed air to make sure there isnt anything in there. Wasnt good enough that time unfortunately. Aparently there was still a small piece of the valve guide in there that decided to free itself up after I put everything back together. It dropped itself down the the port and got stuck between the valve and head.

Thank fully it didnt mess up the head but did let all the fuel dump into the cylinder and wash out the piston rings and caused the motor to spin 2 rod bearings from the gas mixing with the oil.

I soaked the manifold in my parts washer for a couple days to make sure there was nothing else left in there.

I decided to just do a full rebuild as it had 100k miles on it anyway.

If you have never messed with the timing on one of these let me tell you how much of a pain in the ass it is. Requires special tools to hold everything in place since ford decided to not use any pins or keys for the cams/cam gears. 3 timing chains that like to break the guides when trying to remove them. You name it, big head ache.

Now that Ive done it 3 times, its no big deal anymore.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info! I purchased an intake and then we decided to buy another vehicle.... So, If you or anyone else needs an intake for a 02 4.0L let me know!

Thanks again

Jake
