4.0l ohv or sohc Which do i have

I know a decent amount about engines and can normally tell. However, I've had my 1998 explorer sport now for like three months and I don't know which engine I have. The car is a 4.0 with a five speed transmission, and no where does it mention ohv or sohc. Normally a sohc says it some where under the hood or in the manuel. If anyone can help answer this it would be great.

A sure way to tell is to check your VIN. the 8th digit from left should either be E or X. If your's is E you have the SOHC, the X is the OHV.

Then it's an OHV. It should say EFI on the upper intake manifold.

I have a 97 with the OHV "X" . After I bought it used, I got an air filter and tried to install in the parking lot of the auto parts store. It wouldn't fit. Removed the old one and after some searching the parts guy said I had a V8 engine. A little embearassed, I thought maybe I hadn't checked this out as good as I should have. No, it was just Ford playing their little mix and match game. I swear that half the Fords I've owned, when I go to get parts they tell me I can't have that part.

The entire top end, pistons, cams, intake manifolds, and 50 hp.

They're basically totally different motors that share the same basic block and crank.

The OHV is the tradional Ford V design with the cam inside the engine and the valves operated via rods. The SOHC has individual cams on top of the heads and operates the valves via simple rockers. The OHV producing about 160-165 HP, while the SOHC produces 205-215 HP.
