i meant 4.56 my bad

If you are looking for a junkyard stock replacement, 3.73 is the lowest you can go. And for 31s, that is fine.

i am thinking he means 4.56 ratio

but wow that is just wrong for 31" tires unless you want to drive at under the speed limit overdrive or not

the 3.73 should be fine but if you want more then 410 ratio is apx 10% deeper so increase rpm by that amout and decrease crawl speed by the same

if you want to go 20% from where you are then 456 but personally those are just way way to deep for anything but dedicated rigs where speed and fuel mileage are not really an issue [just my opinion]

i have found gears lower then that in junk yards rangers and explorers came with low gears like that

TTB Explorers NEVER came with a gear ratio lower than 3.73.

ok then i will just will run a locker in the rear and save me some money

you can swap in 4.10 gears from a later model explorer easily... its relatively the same rear end... however, with smuch a small change in tire size, if you have 3.73s now, it will be fine with 31s... i ran my explorer like that for several years and it was fine in the power dept....

i currently have my exploerr wheels with 31s on my 4cyl. yota, it has a 5 speed and 3.07 gears, it sucks....

now owuld i still be ok if i was runnig 32s

Why do that? Just grab a pair of those low gear axles that you have seen in the junkyards and be done with it.

i have a fealing some on is being sarcastic

still be ok how? its not going to perform like stock if you dont do the gears...... 31s with 3.73s isnt that big a jump... however, each time you go up sizes the performance loss gets bigger and bigger..... there are some people on this site that are running 3.73s with 35s! thats a lot of power they are losing! but they are still doing it...

Not at all. You told me that you have seen Explorers in junkyards with a lower ratio than 3.73. If you are 4wd and want to swap out both ends, I would HIGHLY suggest picking up these axles and putting them on your truck if you want to run 31s.

ok and what tire would u sugest i have mtrs right know and i dont think there that great im thinking baout ground hawgs or a super swamper i nead to be able to run in snow and mud because winter is coming

You crack me up Robb ;)

I vote for the 4.10

I have no problem toying with ricey cars with the 3.73 and 30 x 9.5. Of course a real ricer will annihilate me but what can I say it's a 4500 pound vehicle being designed for crawling through things that would eat the ricer alive.

you kill me Robb :D

I'm running a '94 with 32" bfg at's with the 3.73 gears. She still does everything I want her to do. In the woods I do hit the low side of the transfer case. Easier on the clutch. For an everyday runner the at's will give enough traction to get through most snow storms and still be able to hear the radio in the dry. :D
