4.11 vs 4.56

I have a 94 with stock 3.27 open diffs. I am running a 32/11.50/15. With that 32" tire would i be better off running a 4.11 or 4.56 gear?
While on this page will my diff accommodate a gear ratio like the 4.56
Yes i do drive my ex everyday, and no I don't care about gas millage.

Usually 4.56 are recommend for 33's. For better mpg especially highway the 4.11 would be the route to go but if you want more zip i would go with the 4.56. Personally i would go with the 4.56 if you have to change out the diffs anyways.

Why does he have to change out the diffs? I can't remember what my stock gears were, but I put 4.88 R & P's in my stock open diffs no prob.

I'm assuming you have an automatic? Mine is a manual, and I'm putting 35's under her soon, so 4.88s were the way to go. I think you should be just fine with 4.11s, unless you off road a lot or plan on going bigger someday.

I don't think he literally meant swapping out differentials - but rather, I think he meant setting up the gears.

I'd go 4.88s, you said you don't care about mileage and you will probably be running bigger rubber at some point anyways.

dont fear the gear!!!! go 4.56 or even 4.88 if you really dont care about gas or you ever plan on going to 35s!! o by the way it would be 4.10 or 4.56 dont think they make 4.11 for the d35

Don't bother with the 4.10's if you're gonna re-gear. Go 4.56 at minimum. If you really don't care about mileage and stuff, you'll never regret the deeper gear. And you really have to admit to your self that 32's are not gonna be big enough for ever, so gear for the future! And if the 4.56's are to deep for you, get more lift and get bigger tires and it'll all be better.

It's way easier to change tires than it is to change gears...

Not to thread-jack but I just realized my Explorer (second-hand) is not running stock tires. 275/75/R15 which is about 31 inches. I have the base 3.55 open diffs at the moment. Looks like I need a 4.10 diff, don't you think? It looks like I would have to get a 4.10 off a Ranger truck because I don't see where the Explorer came with one. Or would an Explorer 3.73 be enough? I don't know how much the 3.55 is hammering my gas mileage driving around town.

I'm running 31x10.50R15s on mine with stock 3.73s. I have a 5 speed, and I get 14-17 (depending on foot weight) city and 21 on the highway.

It looks a little overwhelming but just pick your tranny, t-case, engine, gears, and tire size from the drop down menus and it will tell you your revs at different speeds in different gears. You want to have your truck revving about the same as stock.

That being said, I also ran 31's with 3.73's and it was tolerable. I think 4.10's would be a better fit but 3.55's is gonna hurt on power and mileage.

That chart on TRS is pretty generic... not gonna give you all that accurate of a guage... it's based of a 1:1 gear ratio on a manual tranny in 4th...

Check out the calculator I mentioned... it's the most complete answer you'll find.

Second gen explorers came with 410s but you have to buy new gears for the front if you have 4x4. Don't use a ranger rearend
