Hey guys,
I've got a 2WD '92 Navajo with a manual 5 in it and want to do the V8/auto swap. I originally wanted to go with the 302/C4 combo because of the cost and simplicity involved. However, I was recently offered access to a wrecked '02 Crown Vic with the 4.6/AOD. I already know the harness and ECU would need to be changed, but would I need to add a body lift for clearance? Is this a good swap? I've done complete drivetrain conversions before, but that was in the old days with '60's and early '70's vehicles when things were a little less complicated.

Welcome. Never tried the modular engine swap in any vehicle (yet). But from the looks of the modular engines, they are fairly wide. Like big block wide. I don't see a body lifting having to come into play, but you may have to possibly eliminate some accessories and/or relocate things due to its width. I'm thinking about doing a V10 swap into mine (94' Nav. 5spd).

Ever thought of doing a Vortec V8 swap? More power, a bit more narrow too.

The 4.6 is a possibility, but the 5.0 is an easier swap and is cheaper to extract power from. The 5.0 is a bit torquier motor by nature.

Honestly though my 4.0 has enough power to put a grin on my face every day, with only the modifications in my signature. If yours isn't making good power you might want to make sure it's running right and consider some cheap mods like I did.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the input. My 4.0's power is fine, but my wrenching finger is getting itchy and with the Crown Vic getting dropped in my lap I thought I'd ask around.

Mark... Is the Vortec V8 a Chevy small block?
