OK Guys I have done many a search before you all rag on me and I have not found a truly definitive answer to my question. I am going to get a 4 channel amp to run my 2 door speakers and 2 rear speakers and I wanted to know how hard it is to install myself, what materials and tools I will need, etc. etc. I have an aftermarket HU if that makes a difference? ANY INPUT would be appreciated as I am either going to decide to do it myself or cough up money for someone else to do it pretty soon.

Hornz no problem. It is a walk in the park. Any questions just PM me.

Thanx for replying to my thread..You are a huge help!!

It is a very easy install. If your HU has more than rca 1 pre-out then install is even easier. Things that you would need would be power wire 4 or 8 awg, ground wire the same. Two sets of RCA's and speaker wire. You would need an inline fuse holder for power wire no more than 18" from battery. Any other questions, pm me.

Do it yourself! How big of an amp? I'm a big fan of 4 gauge. Theres a large grommet under the steering wheel the power wire can go through. I'd get a 4 channel rca cable (only 1 rca to run) Then you'll need to run a remote. Where is this being mounted? You'll need a ground close to the amp. Rca, power, ground, remote and speaker wire, It's not too bad, and people on here can answer any other questions you may have.:)

You don't always get the best deal but you may want to look into a pre made amp wiring kit.

I was going to suggest buying a amp kit cause it has everything you would need, but when I bought one from wal-mart, the power wire was too short.

Did you install the head unit yourself? If not, then let an installer do the amp, cause if you have to ask what's needed, you may not be up to doing it. Plus if something breaks, they will be responsible.

some things to consider, not meant to scare you away...
-do you understand power ground, remote turn on leads
-fuses
-speakers
-rca's
--heres a rough idea of what your'e in for.......
if so, then i'd say go for it, first decide where youre gonna put it, some 4 channels are rather large, while others are small, so find a suitable location, then depending on the size of the amp, get suitable wire
>i recommend nothing smaller than 8 guage for decent size amps.
so after you decide where youre' gonna mount the amp, measure how much power wire (wire from your battery to your amp), youre gonna need. typically its around 10-15 feet or so depending..... anyways run the power wire from your battery to your amp, and dont forget to install a suitable fuse+holder, about 10"-20" from the battery. You should have the amp relatively close to some metal to use as a ground, i used the black, carpet covered metal piece that springs over the gap behind the backseats. be sure to sand any paint off so you get a clean connection. Normally grounds shouldn't be much longer than 3 feet or so. So you have your amp powered and grounded, now you need to run a remote wire ( or power antenna), typically blue from your Head Unit to your amp, this tells the amp when to turn on, a smaller guage wire is normal for this, probably around 18 guage. After you run the remote you need to get some RCA cables to run the signal from the HU to the amp, you might want to measure how far you'll need to run them from HU to AMP, and buy a pair accordingly, i believe mine were 14/16 feet long. Hook up the RCA's.
>Now you should have your Power, Ground, Remote, and RCA's.....now the fun part. (scared yet?)
You have a few choices now, you can run wire from your amp to your factory speaker wire in your dash, previously attached to your HU, or you can run new wire to each speaker in each door. For slightly more ease, i just ran new wire into each door, but thats up to you...
I'd say just run speaker wire up to the corresponding factory speaker wire, if you dont want to run new wire.
heres a crude diagram that ive used before:

some things to note, your head unit should now not be attached to your door speakers, your external 4ch amp will be powering them....
-(the middle paragraph where it says, "instead they should be going to your amp"--i'm talking about your factory speaker wires, they should be going to your 4ch amp. all righty then...so if I haven't scared you off have fun, and be careful, and most importantly if your'e not sure if you can do this, leave it to the professionals, better safe than sorry
good luck

My biggest advice... didn't see someone else say it... Run power wire+remote wire on one side of the truck and signal wires (RCA's) on the other side of the truck. Otherwise, you're asking for lovely alternator whine. If it sounds like too much, 4 channel amp installs are only like $75 where I work (Crutchfield ~ Charlottesville, VA). Also, if you really wanna be pimp, check out this amp install... tarheel085 did this...

i'm planning on doing the same thing in my '99 X Sport...

Good luck

Another thing... the factory amp is located behind the passenger side molding in the cargo bay... if you pull this molding back, you can have access to every speaker wire. Just look up the wiring codes online - that a way you won't have to run speaker wires very far.
