I have a 4x4 limited w/110K miles on it. MY 1996, it has 4 wheel abs on it. When I stop (about 40% of the time), the pedal pulses just as I'm coming to a stop. I get no faults on the warning lamp, I took it in and there were no codes on the computer. The electronics seam to work fine. Th mechanic told me that he didn't see any sensors on the rear's. The manual says its 4 wheel, and I can't see abs on the fronts only. Any ideas?

thanks!

Rear is in the back of the pumpkin. One bolt holding it on. Take it out and clean up the sensor a bit. It can get grungy.

Th mechanic told me that he didn't see any sensors on the rear's.

Get a new mechanic. :D

Thanks! I'll check it out.

That happened to me on my 97 but my ABS light would come on. Turned out to be a front speed sensor.

I found out that the rear sensor might be dirty or that the gears in the rear end might be missing a tooth or two. I'll pull the sensor and clean it when the weather warms up a bit. Tooooo cold right now.

Thanks

Somtimes

Cleaning won't hurt but those sensors work with magnetically. Cleaning may not fix the problem.

Good luck!

Hey guys I live in Tennnessee and It only snowes once a year which was yesterday(5-6 inches).Anyways first off let me say that the explorer drives pretty good in the snow(have to put it in 4x4 high occanionally). For a little while the ABS light was on and I dont know why, and then I went to my friend house and parked it. I started it up about an hour later and the ABS light was off. Was driving home and was going about 5 or 10 mph down a pretty steep hill in my neighborhood and all of a sudden the pedal practically dropped to the floor and started pulsating up and down.(Yes I did read the other posts above)Before I knew it I was going like 40 or so(didnt really have time to look at the spedometer because I was fearing for my life)and I just couldnt freakin stop then finially I hit a curve and was on the grass and on the road and this slowed me down. I didnt see and damage when I got out of my car.But the thing is why did this happen and should I get my brakes checked out or is this just the ABS doing its thing and not letting the brakes lock up. I really dont know but could use the unput thanks(sorry for the long post)

Beast, that does not sound normal. Have the ABS checked. Also, what tires u running, and what condition are they in??

FordBeast98, I can't say for sure because I wasn't with you but it sounds like you were sliding down that hill. Once ABS locks it does feel as if it is pulsating under your foot, at this point you are virtually locked up and your wheels are not turning except for very breif intervals whicj feel like pulses. If this is the case simply let off the brake apply a bit of throttle and then slowly reapply the brakes. Once you are stopped put it in 4X4 low and first gear and let the engine braking take you off the hill, you may need to apply some throttle to get above 2 or 3 miles per hour.

hey TPLYNCH im running XC LT4 tires just like u and I think there great tires. There only like a half a year old.

I think youre right muddlover and its just the ABS. I think to me it was a bit shocking because I have never done that before. Ohhh, and I was was driving the other day on a backroad and it had some ice. It did the same thing but not as intense. Tried 4x4 and brakes worked a little bit better. But overall I think it the ABS on the ice.

I'd have to agree it was the ABS then. If the road was a sheet of ice, then it would probably not help much, especially downhill.

As for the tires, good choice. Mine have ~60K on them and they still look and handle like they're brand new. Was out driving in the Xmas ice/snow here in southern NY and they were great. I was cruising past other SUV's as they spun and slid off the roads.
