Last week, the lights in the dash of my 98 explorer that indicate the explorer is in 4-wheel drive came on ( both high and low range ) and started blinking 6 times and then continues to repeat the blinking about every 2 minutes. The vehicle will not go into 4-wheel now when manually switched. -------Any suggestions ?????

Welcome to this forum! Read the sticky thread in the transmission section on rebuilding the shift motor for more information.
Wrong year again, BB... The shift motor, in all likelihood, is fine. Shift motor failures on the second-gens are exceptionally rare.

The short answer is that there's no way to know what's causing the lights to blink. Without connecting it to an NGS or WDS scanner, there's no way to know what code was stored or, therefore, what caused the problem.

Now, that being said, a common cause is a bad rear axle speed sensor. They're out in the elements, and take a fair amount of abuse. It's a $13 part, is easy to replace, and fixes the problem about half the time. It can't hurt to try it.
