 My 4 x 4 dash button no longer lights up. The 4 wheel drive does not work at all.

I used it on Saturday pulling my boat and trailer from the river and Wednesday when I pressed the electronic button for the 4 wheel drive, it would not light up.

I don't remember all of the specifics, but this is a common problem on Explorers. Often it is caused by a dirty t-case shift motor. The singleton site (address can be found via a search or on the "explorer resources" page of this site) describes well the process of cleaning/rebuilding the shift motor to get it functioning.
From there, I haven't had much experience with the electronic 4x4 system. Check the wiring, check for power through the system, check the t-case shift module (it has a simple diagnostic test built into it).

Dirty T Case

:banghead:

Thanks for the advice. I will take this info to my son-in-law tomorrow; see if he can help. I will post results.

the same thing happened to myself and all I was told to do was to tap on the shift case motor lightly with a hammer. It solved the problem and everything still works good.

You need to take the shift motor off the t-case and clean it:D The contacts are probally dirty
