I have a '91 explorer and for some reason she doesn't shift into fourth (at least I think it's fourth) until she reaches 4000 RPM and then she shifts with some 'kick', like enough for a noticeable slight 'whiplash' effect and it's usually around 60 Kph. She used to shift like that at 50 Kph and around 3500 RPM but now it's gone up to 60 and 4000, after she shifts though the RPM's drop to around 2000 RPM. Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Modulator valve probably. Run a search for that term. You will find all kinds of info on how to check it. They are cheap to replace.

I have a new modulator valve and had the intentions of replacing it today but when I got down under and had a look I couldn't even get close to seeing, let alone accessing the valve. It is up behind the catalytic converter (I think that's what it is) or some part of the muffler assembly anyhow and there is no way to get access to it from below, how in the world do you change it? In the Haynes manual I have it just says remove the heat shield and bolt holding the bracket and remove it, much easier said than done I came to find out because of it's location. Does the converter have to come off or is there some other method? And after reading a few threads about others having such difficulty changing the modulators, with my 4500 RPM for shifting into one of the gears as the only concern it seems, is it necessary or worth my while right now to change it out? Thanks.

I have not done it on an X...........but, I was told there is a trap door under the carpet on them. I cannot confirm nor deny that though, ok?

I would replace it now! You are slipping parts in the trans. Slipping is heat and wear (serious damage). We do not need to damage an A4LD. When you change it, just don't lose the little pin behind it (or forget and leave it out).

Hope that helps a little,
Brian
