I have been reading up on how to put a 410 comp cam in my truck and to my understanding do not need to remove the heads. What i have gathered is that i would need new pushrods measuring 5.550" in length. My questions are will i need anything additional items? Also my biggest questoin is has any one done a dyno on a before and after on the cams or atleast give me a general idea of what type of performance gains. I found the cam should improve power in the higher rpm range i believe. If i do decide to put a new cam in my truck which has a 5 spd i will have my cuz help install it since he has worked more on engines then i have.

Have I put one in? No... Can I answer all your questions? Yes...

I don't have a dyno chart, or know of one, of a direct increase from this cam the general guide line provided by Comp cams is 15rwhp and 18rwtq. Those numbers sound very realistic IMO... compared to 7-10rwhp from a 66mm throttle body

With a 410 comp cam, you need the 5.550" pushrods of course. If your motor has over ~100k miles, then you probably want to re-ring the motor as well.

Plan on replacing the stock valve springs. Dual valve springs would be a better, but it’s not necessary with the 410 model.

Of course, you are going to want to inspect/replace the lifters (going to have to take the heads off), and the rocker arms (I would recommend getting new rocker arms and your custom length pushrods from www.delta-cams.com). The timing set would be good to replace. Your main bearings and rod bearings should be inspected. Most likely they are going to look as good as the day they were installed, but just make sure they haven’t started obliging out their bores; otherwise machine work is going to be needed.

IMO, if you want to put this cam in, rebuild the whole motor...

Thanks for the answer that will really help me out. Thats also more power to the pavement then i thought which is great. Yeah i have the BBK TB and that was after the cone air filter and cat back and i would say there was a slight improvement in seat of the pants power. The cam just looks like the best bang for buck in the price range i want to spend. I currently have 134,x.. miles on my truck but the engine is still going strong so i dont think it would be worth it to rebuild yet. Thanks again.

I was told that the pushrods had to be 5.525. I assume you have the 5.550 in yours? When I put my cam in, I didnt get the pushrods. Yea I know bad idea. I am going to get them soon. I think Doug from 4.0 performance told me 5.525 but can't remember. What do I need to tell them when I order the rods? 5/16 etc...? Well I'm glad I saw this.

I am not sure but now i have seen both numbers come up a couple times 5.550 and 5.525. Look here for diameter but i think it is 5/16".

You say that the cam makes HP at the higher RPM range. What size tires and diff. ratio to you have? To large a tire and a numerically lower ratio and you won't get that seat of the pants feel from this cam.
At 134 k and you've taken care of the engine I would not do a rebuild also. You could do a leak down test. Put plenty of assembly lube on the lifters and lobes. Also be extremly careful when installing the cam so as not to nick the cam bearings. I make a special tool that bolts the the end of the cam that has an extended handle so you can slid it in without the cam falling down lower then the cam bushings as you get closer to the end bearings.

This cam is supposed to be a better cam for towing and such. The 422 cam is the one that makes the power on top. The 410 is suppossed to be lower to mid.

XLT, Read what Josh just said, compared to what rpm range you said. Lower to mid range makes more sense to me for a truck.

Do some research. There are a lot of cam threads here.

Actually i dont have it, but i was so, so close to buying it a couple months back, until some unexpected finance problems. I was going to buy the 410 cam with a set of 5.550 length rods. I thought the 5.525 was for the 422. I might be compleletly wrong, i'd trust what Doug said.

EDIT: i checked that thread, MaximumVoilence said 5.525 was on the comp cams web page for the 410.

Why would you need to pull the heads to change the lifters? Are they too long to come out of the lifter bore without hitting the head?

Yea I think so. I seem to remember having to turn the motor upside down on the stand so I could put the cam in because I couldnt get the lifters out. I think the valley is real shallow on this motor.
