I have a 2001 Explorer with the 4L SOHC. I am generally pleased with the engine. But when accelerating, it is very prone to knocking. Even when I am running 89 octane gas.

Do others have this problem?

Can you tune this knocking out some way?

Are there modifications that will help? I was wondering if one of those helix throttle body spacers that create more intake turburlance might do a better job of mixing the air & fuel and reduce the knocking.

What advice do you have.

Thanks

Are you talking about a ping, detonation or preingnition?

First thing to do is to change your fuel filter and use a pressure gauge to do a output test on your fuel pump. Next I would try a good cleaner like sea foam or similar to remove any carbon deposits from your combustion chambers that may be causing preignition.

Does it sond like marbles hiting each other?

If that doesn't work I might consider a custom tune to correct it.

Your SOHC engine has a anti-knock sensor that is theoretically supposed to stop spark knock by reducing the timing a bit.

Your truck may need nothing other than a minor tune-up. In your case I would recommend you pull the MAF sensor and clean it (detailed instructions on this website) since that is easy and cheap. Then see if that fixes it and go from there.

Thank you both for the suggestions. I will try both of them. Do you know where the fuel filter in on this rig?

Thanks

clan the maf and get some seafoam also

I don't know if it is the same location. but on my 96- the fuel filter is on the bottom under the frame on the driver side. Its probably tuckedup in there.
