To cut to the chase, I have a '98 4.0 SOHC 4x4 with transmission problems. Would a 4R55E tranny fit on my '98? I understand mine has the 5R55E. Would there be compatibility problems going from a 5-speed to the 4-speed?

A friend is offering me a 4r55e tranny... need help ASAP...

Thanks!

It will bolt up... you will have some comuter compatibility problems, though I don't know what kind exactly.

Problem

Here are the problems with my trans:

1) 1st & 2nd gears are fine, but won't shift any higher than that.

2) It shifts into reverse (you can hear it) but when you step on the throttle, the car won't move.

The price of a rebuild is making me look for alternate solutions.
Thanks again guys!

How many miles do you have? From what you are describing, it sounds like a valve body problem (possibly the gaskets, or loose vb bolts). If you have high mileage, it would be a good idea to replace the EPC solenoid. It is advisable to read Glacier991's 5R55E VB rebuild diary first before attempting this.
