So catching up on maintenance on my project 5.0. I've seen quite a few guys say they are running Mobil 1 atf instead of mercon V.

I am planning to keep this vehicle till it is not possible to fix anymore is there any advantage to using synthetic fluid versus mercon? I'm not sure when the fluid was last changed so I'm going to put a new filter and a pan with a drain bolt for easy future changes. And soon as money allows a new valve body with a shift kit

Mercon V is a synthetic blend fluid. You will get a million different answers on this question. I have found the recommended fluid for the application to be the best for overall performance and shift feel.

Mercon V from Mobil one is just fine. AS LONG AS IT IS CERTIFIED FOR MERCON V you can run it.
Mobil one or Valvoline make some of the best fluids

Do not use Mercon III, do not use mercon VI, Do not change Mercon III to be Mercon V with a modifier, just use a Mercon V fluid and you will be good. I prefer Mobil one mercon V full synthetic but it can be expensive so I will use Valvoline also
